What's Open, What's Closed on Labor Day

Businesses? Mostly open. Bars and restaurants? Open. Banks? Closed, of course!

Labor Day is held on the first Monday in September each year. Unofficially the last day of summer, the holiday, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, "constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."


Here's a list of what's closed on Monday. If you know of other local businesses that are closing or altering their hours Monday, post them in the comments below!

  • All federal and state offices
  • All municipal offices
  • All public schools
  • Public libraries
  • U.S. financial markets
  • Banks and credit unions
  • All postal offices
  • Some businesses (call first to see if your destination is open)

What's Open on Monday

  • Retail Stores
  • Supermarkets
  • Restaurants
  • Convenience stores
  • Bars/Taverns
  • ShopRite and Whole Foods will be open on Labor Day from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.
  • Clearview Millburn Cinema 4 is open; for movies and showtimes visit this website.

New Jersey Transit: Today (Friday), beginning at around 1 p.m., extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor and Morris & Essex lines, both of which serve West Orange. On Labor Day (Monday) trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines.
