Keeping It Simple and Delicious

A reminder of how good fresh orange juice can taste, and how good it is for you!

It has been a tough week for many of us in this area. Mother Nature decided to show us who’s in charge again, and she definitely got her message across. That so much devastation can be caused from 12 hours of snowfall is incredible to me, what power and strength from something as little as a snowflake, a good illustration of the impact of strength in numbers!

With so many friends and neighbors being affected by the loss of power, comes a renewed appreciation of all things electrical that we take for granted on a daily basis. Heat, hot water, lights – the basics of comfortable living. It got me thinking about getting back to basics, and I decided to focus on something that many people drink every day, out of a box that they keep cold in their refrigerator and that we also take for granted – basic orange juice.

But this week I want to elevate the humble orange out of its place in the bottom of the fruit bowl, to center stage on the counter top. Instead of reaching for the box from the fridge, especially if the fridge isn’t working, treat yourself to glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

You don’t need a juicer, just a citrus squeezer will do. You will probably need two or three oranges.  Cut them in half and squeeze away. When you have a glass of frothy creamy juice, take a lemon, cut it in half and squeeze that into the glass in the same way.

What you will have made is a product so completely different from the drink you pour from the box in your fridge, that you will be shocked. Not only that, your glass will be packed with more vitamin C, calcium, folic acid, iron, potassium, thiamine, vitamin B6 than you would get from the boxed drink.

Oranges contain antioxidants that help destroy the free radicals that age the skin and cause premature wrinkles and sagging. Their high citric acid content helps to clean the buildup of toxins in your digestive system, and they are loaded with beta carotene! Amazing.

Back to basics, no additives, no pasteurization, no packaging and no processing.  Freshly squeezed orange juice is an incredible thing

Happy Juicing,
