Bedtime Math: Making math a fun part of kids' everyday lives

Bedtime Math makes math a natural, playful part of kids’ everyday lives by sending parents a daily math problem to do with their kids.

Hi everyone,

I’m Laura Overdeck, the founder of Bedtime Math.  As you can tell from the name, Bedtime Math is a pretty simple idea: we all know we should read to our kids at night, but what about math?  My husband and I have done fun, mischief-loaded math problems with our kids at night for years, and when at age 2 our third child started hollering for his own math problem, we realized we were onto something: In a world where people say “Ewww, math!”, we had created a household culture where kids don’t just tolerate math, they actually seek it out.

With Bedtime Math, our goal is to help kids get comfortable with math while they’re still open to loving it, by relating it to our regular, everyday lives. We send parents a fun, new math problem every day to do with their kids.  It starts with a brief set-up story – electric eels, chocolate chips, zip lines into the neighbor’s pool – then asks math questions at three levels of challenge, challenge, covering preschoolers through second grade and up.   Not only are kids enjoying it, but we’ve had parents write in to say they’re starting to like math for the first time, too.

We'll be posting sample Bedtime Math Problems here on Patch from time to time.  You can also check us out at www.bedtimemath.org, and can sign up to get them daily by email.  We hope you’ll join our growing movement and help us make nightly math as common and beloved as the bedtime story!
