An October Snowstorm

There's some natural catastrophe hitting us once a month or so. I used to think our area was immune to things like hurricanes and earthquakes.

I can't remember ever getting hit with a winter storm dropping this much snow in October. I listened to all the weather reports, I heard the predictions and I still didn't believe it even when it began to snow.  But later that night, after the lights went out, after the tree limbs that came crashing down, after a short drive to a neighbor's house to pick up my kid which took an hour traveling through a war zone of fallen trees and downed power lines, the reality of the snow hit me.

I can't recall this much damage in a long time. Oh no, wait...that's right, Hurricane Irene was just a couple of months ago. Let's not forget the earthquake we had that same week as Irene. And then we have those "100-year floods" except these days they seem to occur more like every few years (especially if you live in downtown Millburn).

What's going on here?

There's some natural catastrophe hitting us once a month or so. I used to think our area was immune to things like hurricanes and earthquakes. I thought all we had to worry about were break-ins and muggings. But this natural disaster stuff....not for me.

The earthquake was a non-event. Come on.

Many experts point to the effects of climate change becoming reality sooner than most had predicted even 5 years ago. Fasten your seat belts, this may be the new reality...and it wouldn't hurt to try to reduce your carbon footprint.
