An October Snowstorm

There's some natural catastrophe hitting us once a month or so. I used to think our area was immune to things like hurricanes and earthquakes.

I can't remember ever getting hit with a winter storm dropping this much snow in October. I listened to all the weather reports, I heard the predictions and I still didn't believe it even when it began to snow.  But later that night, after the lights went out, after the tree limbs that came crashing down, after a short drive to a neighbor's house to pick up my kid which took an hour traveling through a war zone of fallen trees and downed power lines, the reality of the snow hit me.

I can't recall this much damage in a long time. Oh no, wait...that's right, Hurricane Irene was just a couple of months ago. Let's not forget the earthquake we had that same week as Irene. And then we have those "100-year floods" except these days they seem to occur more like every few years (especially if you live in downtown Millburn).
