Macy's Employee Arrested Trying to Steal Eight Shirts

Samuel Bernard, 22, of Maplewood, was arrested for shoplifting from Macy's in Mall at Short Hills.

A Macy's employee was arrested Monday afternoon for allegedly attempting to steal eight t-shirts from the Mall at Short Hills store, Millburn police said.

Samuel Bernard, 22, of Maplewood was arrested for shoplifting at about 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 18.

According to the report, Bernard was seen by security putting four INC shirts under his jacket prior to leaving for his break.

Macy's security told police Bernard put the four shirts in his car.

At about 5 p.m., Bernard tried to hide four more INC shirts under his jacket and leave the store again, the report said.

Security stopped Bernard from leaving the store the second time and retrieved the stolen shirts from his car.

Bernard was arrested and released pending a municipal court date in Millburn, police said.

The mall does attract an unsavory element to a well-off community like ours. Maybe more security is the answer, no?

No. This particular "unsavory element" worked at Macy's. I don't see how "more security" would prevent employees (or anyone else) from shoplifting, especially since the existing mall security was able to nab the miscreant. Short of posting armed guards at the borders of Short Hills to check the IDs of everyone who tries to gain entrance there's nothing to prevent the hoi polloi from gaining access to your well-off community. And really, that wouldn't be a good idea because then how would landscapers, house cleaners, pool maintenance guys and all the other low-born but necessary peasants get in?

This is quite a tirade for such a trivial comment.
