Apparently Millburn-Shorthills has become the hotbed for violent crimes. The police response time and tactics are a joke. 1. Home invasions 2. Car jackings 3. Jewelry Heists 4. More car jackings It's become unsafe to live here now, not because of the criminals, any where you go there will be criminals, but because of the shoddy police force who's main focus is ticketing cars who are parked on the street over night when the plates clearly indicate that the car belongs to that residence (sorry I got personal there). My point is that the police department needs more officers or they need to get more training. I would make it a policy to run every plate that crosses this town, stop any cars who don't belong here and get the message out that we are not playing any games. Also, install cameras at every entrance and exit of the mall. Matter of fact, install cameras at every main intersection, we only have a handful. Clearly this town, this mall and it's citizens are targets. I refuse to be a target.

You mention citing an article. What article is that? I am planning to read more about this. Thanks.

I've heard.. Criminals from the Newark/East Orange area are targeting the Millburn/ Short Hills & immediate areas to 1. Carjack expensive cars, use them in a crime and then getting money from them by selling them in the black market to ship off in containers overseas 2. For gang membership.. kill someone, carjack someone etc. Its just disgusting how we has good citizens are defenseless against gun carrying criminals. One should have the right to defend themselves!

NJ governmetn. can we please have our right returned to us to carry our guns with us? I think the government should be charged with a crime everytime one of us gets attacked or killed. This is disgraceful. The goody two shoe progressive liberal brats just know what is best for us all. aholes.

Citizens, ignore the law, carry a gun with you, protect yourselves, the police are minutes away when seconds count. You are an American, not a victim. "Don't Tread On ME" is a warning to all, not a feeble request. Arm yourselves! These cops are not worth it to depend on.

Hello, we are police officers. We have the right to carry a gun and protect ourselves. You citizens don't. You just go to work and pay your taxes so we can get paid and arrest you for protecting yourselves. Don't worry, when you get murdered, we have guys come out in lab coats to gather evidence and put you in a regulation type body bag and process your death certificate and make everything nice and orderly. So let us carry the guns and you keep yourselves unarmed and helpless. It is good job security for us. Thank you for your anti gun support. it makes us more important and helps with our pay increases. Keep that tax money coming in. We need it.

Ten days before Christmas, this is an absolute disgrace how sad for the family and friends. I am all for ccw in NJ and would in a second if allowed by law. However, the best article I have read on this incident was on the Daily Mail (only article I saw that provided a description of the perps by the way) and it indicated that the victim refused the car. Not wanting to blame the victim, but if true, please consider that nothing you own or possess is worth your life or the life of a loved one, the car is insured let them take it. Give it to them, throw them what they want and run in the other direction, these animals will more than likely accidently shoot you, just as soon do it intentionally. These thugs and gangsters do not value your life and will kill you for much less than a range rover, they have shot people for their sneakers and coats and I am sure went home and got a good nights sleep. They also do not fear prison, because if they go, it gives them street credibility, they continue the gangster life inside and after they do their 10-20 of course plea bargained down by the prosecutors and approved by judges, getting out early for good behavior, etc. The only true deterrent/solution is capital punishment, if it is not a deterrent to others, so be it, but at least the same animals will not have a chance to do this or worse again. As far as the police are concerned, I cannot speak to how good or bad they are, but this was a crime of opportunity which is very difficult to prevent even had the best police force in the world been 5 blocks away. Could this have ended differently had the man and women been armed, absolutely, perhaps not with the Hollywood ending we would all like to have seen, unfortunately they were never given the chance to find out.

Just imagine if the bad guys couldn't get their hands on a gun to start with...Shame on the NRA and anyone who supports their massive sales that out number the current population in the U.S.; all in the name of profits.

The Mall at Short Hills is a HAVEN for shoplifters from Newark. I was almost robbed there a month ago. This It is a huge burden for the Millburn PD and reflects in the crime statistics of Millburn. It also brings in criminals that know they will never serve jail time for theft in Essex County (not enough judges and jail space to function effectively). If we allow this to happen the area is going to get dangerous. And now this poor man and his family are the newest victims. We need to be vigilant. If you want to do something to make NJ a safer right now please contact Senator Nicholas Scutari (908) 587-0404 and tell him to get tough on crime. He heads the Senate Judiciary Committee where many great bills which would punish these criminals. Urge him to bring Bill number S2987 to a vote. "Creates first degree crime of home invasion, makes crime subject to No Early Release Act, and upgrades burglary of a residence to a second degree crime under certain circumstances." Without his action this bill will be dead just like two similar ones before it. Thoughts and prayers to this victims family..

I wonder if Al Sharpton is going to mention this tonight on his show. God forbid if it was 2 white men that killed a young black person Rev Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be outraged and marching in Short Hills! Knowing its a Holiday season where were the police!! Maybe the carjackers believed the car was part of the redistribution of wealth.

@Cranky Fake you've likely never had something taken that was your right from your hands. Many people without even thinking reach back for it or attempt to recover it... The fight or flight response is also inside of everyone.. which is why when fear kicks in, your body pumps adrenaline and blood at a rapid rate so you can do something about it.

security must be tripled. the 1950 version of security is outdated. garage and outside lot parking need more security attention including the off mall courtesy parking. joseph p.martino

I've been to Texas.. visited several bars etc. Its very interesting to see others behaviors vs. bars in NJ etc. I asked some of the locals around and they responded with "You think twice about how to treat people when you dont know who could actually be carrying a firearm"

Ihave been a proud resident of SH for almost 30 years now, have always been proud and believed my family as well as myself were "relatively" safe..recent events have started us to think otherwise ..this tragic murder at the mall last night has left us shaken and disillusioned to say the least..many questions must be answered now...and I do believe our township leaders need to do some real soul searching ..such as what steps might have been taken before this life changing tragedy .

@Oscar, I have and it sucks giving something up that you own or earn goes against human nature I know it does, but in that situation, my life or even more so my wife's life is not worth my car. I trained in martial arts for many years and one of the things they taught was to walk away from a fight, if you are being robbed, give them you wallet, only do something if it is a last resort, again anything other than protecting a human life is not worth the risk. In that same situation, I very well may have done exactly what this guy did, but could only hope a little voice tells me just to give them the car.

Not that I live my life by race, but it has become apparent to me that the media and the progressive liberals have injected so much hatred in young american blacks, that is has and is becoming more dangerous to be a white american in this country. Furthermore, just being well off enough to own nice things no matter what race you are makes you a victim. A black man with a range rover would become a victim because he was "rich". The whole progressive movement in this country has a very ugly consequence. Hate. Hate the rich, hate the white, hate anyone that is rich regardless of their race. Vote for the progressive liberal commies and vote with your hatred. You NJians are getting what you wished for...a socialist society. What you don't realize is that socialism is the consequence of an immoral society. Look at what you have done to yourselves. Now with the gun laws you voted in for yourselves, you are not allowed to protect yourselves from you own society. What fools you are. absolute fools. Disarmed and out gunned and walking victims waiting to happen. You make me sick to my stomach.

Keeping guns out of law abiding citizens hands will not keep them out of criminals hands. But it will make criminals think twice before committing a crime if citizens are allowed to carry guns. Was it Ben Franklin who said, "Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security."

If someone were to walk up and try and mug me or kill me while I am walking around morristown, and I pulled a gun and had to shoot him, would all you guys crusify me. Lets say the perp is a black teenager that had really cute baby pictures, and I am a white middle class guy. If you were on the jury would you convict me of murder? Because if you didn't you run the risk of your Princeton buddies calling you a closet racist. You would want to appear to be progressive and self loathing and convict me for defending myself. Do I have that kind of right?
Cranky Fake December 17, 2013 at 12:38 AM
@tom, I learned enough not to bring car keys to a gun fight with people that would think nothing of putting a cap in my head. I did learn how to grab a "man" like you, that means nothing to me, and use you as a shield to keep myself from being a victim.
Lawyer1 December 17, 2013 at 07:31 AM
Unlike in many other states, we here in NJ are left defenseless by the lawyers and judges here under NJ law. We all have a right to to defend ourselves and family members and to use equal force as used against us....Concealed Carry in NJ is a must as we are nothing by sheep being slaughtered by the wolves. NJ citizens need to understand, you are defenseless against these thugs both at home and on the street.
sharon molk December 17, 2013 at 09:37 AM
There should be a law against murder. Criminals will always get guns even if illegal. Only law abiding people pay attention to laws. If the decent public is disarmed then the only ones with guns will be the criminals. I am sure every criminal supports that.
Gemini December 17, 2013 at 12:51 PM
The problem is these savages are repeat offenders, probably have a record a mile long, There is NO law, they need to be locked up and throw the key away.

Seems the bank was robbed yesterday just down the road from the Mall......Yes, a very safe place according to Mayor Haimoff. And we're left defenseless by the judges and lawyers here in NJ while these hold-up men and murderers are on the loose.

Cranky Fake December 19, 2013 at 11:45 PM
@2nd, (always wondered how to spell that wonderful sound by the way) if you defended yourself in NJ in that manner, you would be locked away for a lot longer than the garbage that did this to this poor guy. You would be made an example of and that is a fact. I would contribute to your defense fund and hope like hell I was on your jury, but alas, you would be put into the big house and I am sure you would not be eligible for protective custody. Screwed up system huh, no stand your ground laws here in NJ.
