Ex-Con Charged In Violent Millburn Home Invasion Caught On Nanny Cam

Authorities arrested Shawn Custis, 42, wanted in connection with attack on a young mother while her children were inside the home.

The man wanted for the vicious attack of a Millburn mother in front of her 3-year-old daughter during a home invasion last week has been arrested, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Friday.

Shawn Custis, 42, whose last known address is Newark, was arrested on 10th Street in New York City just after 5:30 p.m. by a Newark-based FBI task force along with personnel from the Essex County Prosecutor's office, said Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the prosecutor's office.

Custis has 12 felony convictions and a record dating back to the early 90s, according to NJ.com. He was released from jail in December after serving 10 months for a series of burglaries in New Jersey in 2011, the article said.

Custis was being transported Friday to an undisclosed location in New Jersey, Ambrose said.

He was charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the prosecutor's office.

Custis was wanted in connection with the home invasion in Millburn where a man kicked down the locked back door of a Cypress Street home just after 10 a.m. last Friday and "viciously" assaulted the woman for more than three minutes while robbing the home.

The attack, which occurred in front of the woman's 3-year-old daughter while her 1-year-old child was upstairs sleeping, was captured on the family's nanny cam.

The video went viral and the reward for the intruder was increased to more than $20,000 with contributions from local residents, business owners and Sen. Richard Codey.

Less than an hour after authorities released Custis' identity Friday afternoon, he was apprehended in Manhattan. He is being held on $750,000 bail.
