Trial of Accused 'Nanny Cam' Attacker Set for November
Shawn Custis charged with attempted murder for violent attack of Millburn mother.
A 43-year-old man prosecutors allege attacked a Millburn mother during a home invasion captured by a "nanny cam" is set to stand trial in November, a Superior Court Judge announced this week.
Judge Ronald Wigler called the Nov. 5 trial date for Shawn Custis "firm" during a brief hearing held Tuesday in Newark, NJ.com reported.
Custis, whose last known residence is Newark, faces attempted murder and related charges, for the violent attack which shook the quiet community a year ago Saturday.
Prosecutors contend Custis kicked down a locked back door of a Cypress Street home just after 10 a.m. on June 21, 2013. Upon entering the living room of the home, prosecutors say Custis "viciously" assaulted the woman for more than three minutes. The footage of the attack taken from a "nanny cam" is the prosecutors' key evidence.
The attacker was captured by the hidden camera punching and kicking the victim repeatedly, ultimately pushing her down the basement stairs, all while her daughter sat on the couch and her 18-month-old son slept in an upstairs bedroom.
Custis was arrested without incident in the lobby of an apartment building in New York City about an hour after authorities identified him as the alleged intruder.
A Newark grand jury indicted Custis in January on one count of attempted murder, one count of first degree robbery, one count of second degree burglary, one count of third degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of third degree criminal restraint, one count of third degree theft, and one count of second degree aggravated assault.
