County Freeholders to Vote on Zoo's Sea Lion Exhibit Tonight

Officials will meet to discuss funding, construction contracts for project

The sea lion exhibit at is just one step away from breaking ground in West Orange.

The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders will meet Wednesday night to vote on four resolutions approving the funding and construction contracts for the project.

If approved, the exhibit will open in the summer of 2013, coinciding with the zoo's 50th anniversary.

The 10,000 square foot exhibit will welcome up to four sea lions and a medley of sharks and sting rays that guests will be able to feed and touch.

The freeholders will meet at 7 p.m. at East Orange City Hall, 44 City Hall Plaza.

Freeholders will vote on the following resolutions related to the sea lion exhibit:

  • Resolution 24: Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs – Authorization to use the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Trust Fund to match the balance of the Green Acres Multi-Park Grant for the creation of the sea lion exhibit at the Turtle Back Zoo - amount not to exceed $705,463.00
  • Resolution 26: Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Authorization to use the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Trust Fund for the creation of the sea lion exhibit at the Turtle Back Zoo – amount not to exceed $1,000,000.00
  • Resolution 27: 2012 Temporary Emergency Appropriation from the Zoological Society of New Jersey, Inc., for sea lion exhibit at Turtle Back Zoo – Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs - $375,000.00
  • Resolution 28: Department of Public Works, Division of Engineering – Contract award to Arco Construction Group, the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, for the construction of sea lion and touch tank exhibit at the Turtle Back Zoo – amount not to exceed $5,485,000.00
