Local Justice: Decisions in Municipal Court

Court handles seven charges in the last week.

Millburn Municipal Court handles cases once a week. Between this week and last, it handled seven chargers.

In State v. Julio Lopez, of Middletown, New York, the State initially charged him with theft of 13 fur coats with an aggregate value of $42,000 from Schultz Furriers.  The Essex County Prosecutor's Office downgraded the offense against Mr.Lopez (who had no prior criminal history) to a disorderly persons offense.  Mr. Lopez pled guilty to the amended charge.  The Court imposed the maximum fine of $500, $33 in court costs, a $50 VCCO penalty, and a $75 safe neighborhood fee. 

The State also separately charged Mr. Julio Lopez with posession of a controlled dangerous substance.  This charge resulted in a conditional discharge.  On this charge, the Court imposed a one year term of probation, a $500 DEDR (Drug Enforcement and Demand Reduction) fee, $33 in court costs, a $50 VCCO penalty, a $75 safe neighborhood fee, a $50 lab fee, and a $75 conditional discharge fee.

The court handled five cases last week, two of them related.

In State v. Erica Goldring and Stephanie Weg, the State charged both with possession of marijuana. The Court entered a conditional discharge for both, and imposed on each of them one-year probation, a $500 DEDR (Drug Enforcement and Demand Reduction) fee, $33 in court costs, a $50 VCCO penalty, a $75 safe neighborhood fee, a $50 lab fee, and a $75 conditional discharge fee.

In State v. Daniela Newkirk, the State charged Newkirk with possession of marijuana.  Defendant pled guilty to the charge.  The Court imposed one-year probation, a $500 DEDR fee, $33 in court costs, a $50 VCCO penalty, a $75 safe neighborhood fee, a $50 lab fee, and a $75 conditional discharge fee.

In State v. Dennis Messias, the State charged him with hindering apprehension by providing false information.  Defendant pled guilty to the charge.  The Court imposed upon defendant Messias fines and costs totaling $658.

In State v. Aisha Steele, the State charged her with theft from Kings (where she was an employee).  She was found guilty of the charge.  The Court ordered Steele to pay restitution of $1,300, imposed fines and costs of $658, plus required her to pay $100 for her public defender.
