Millburn Mayor 'Bags Hunger' At ShopRite

Mayor Sandra Haimoff helps bag groceries to help local food banks.

The Millburn ShopRite kicked off its 13th year participating in September's National Hunger Action Month with its 'Help Bag Hunger' event on Wednesday.

As a part of Partners in Caring Day, Mayor Sandra Haimoff bagged groceries in aile seven to help donations to line the shelves of local food banks.

"Anything that makes people aware of situation is a reason to help," Haimoff said. "Each year I have been mayor I have done this. I always like to chat with everyone."

ShopRite management and the mayor cut a ribbon, opening an aile at 10:30 a.m. for the mayor to pack up groceries with a personalized ShopRite apron.

Gov. Chris Christie sent a proclamation letter to the store, thanking it for all its charity this month. The letter sits framed in the front of the store and management read it over the intercom, announcing his support to ShopRite's customers.

Throughout  month, ShopRite's cashiers have been asking for donations when customers check out. Currently Millburn's Shop Rite has raised over $4,000 for local food banks, with a goal of $7,000 for the month.

"The idea is to not just raise money but raise awareness," manager Frank Rizzo said. "Maybe someone will do something else to help the needy, like donate clothes or food some other time on their own."
