Millburn Superintendent Presents Revised District Goals

Let us know what you think about the board's revised goals in the comments!

Millburn's Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield presented revised district goals with action plans for the 2012-13 school year at a recent Board of Education meeting.

"From the feedback we received, we developed some more wording to flesh out a little more on each of the three goals" Crisfield said.

When the goals were presented in a July meeting the board asked for more clarity how the goals would be achieved. Some board member originally said the goals were too vague.

But at Monday's meeting, the board agreed the revised plan Crisfield presented are more improved and clear.

"I think they're a lot better than before, they are more defined," board member Jean Pasternak said.

The district will continue its second year working on a strategic plan for the town's school system.

A new initiative the district will implement is a new teacher evaluation system. The state has given the New Jersey school district a year to pilot a new teacher evaluation program, which Millburn will start this year as a two-year goal.

The final goal is to update the district's technology. The current plan expires this year. Crisfield explained, the plan needs to be approved by the winter and sent to county officials for review so it can be effective in the 2013-14 school year.

Board member Lisa Chapman asked Crisfield and Dr. Christine Burton how the technology will be integrated into the classrooms, explaining a broader view of the goal of technology in elementary, middle and high schools.

Burton explained the action plan defines those views through state guidelines.

Each board member was given a detailed action plan for each of the goals.

The complete list of district goals are listed below:

  1. Develop a strategic plan (Year 2 of 2)
To develop a BOE approved comprehensive five-year strategic plan providing the vision, goals and action plans to be implemented by member of the school community beginning in the 2013-2013 school year.
  2. Implement the new teacher evaluation system (Year 1 of 2)
To provide training and professional development to Millburn teachers and administrators for the educator evaluation and accountability system to be implemented for teach evaluation commencing in the 2013-2014 school year.
  3. Update the district's three-year technology plan (Year 1 of 1)
To develop a BOE approved comprehensive three-year technology plan beginning in the 2013-14 school year providing the infrastructure, resources and curricular integration to prepare students to meet the challenge of a dynamic global society.

This district is looking at excellence in the rear view mirror! Poor poor children.

I am Elliot Cahn, 15 year resident of Millburn with 21 years of experience as a teacher. I am running for the BOE in November. I believe district goals should always be focused on student achievement. If I'm elected, I would advocate for the board and administrators to collaborate on setting goals that focus on improving student achievement.
