The Millburn fencing team won five medals in the Montclair Freshman-Sophomore Invitational last weekend at Montclair High School. In all, 34 Millburn freshmen and sophomores were among the 250-plus participants.
The Millers competed with fencers from other high schools including Montclair, Governor Livingston, West Essex, St Augustine Prep, Chatham, Moorestown Friends, West Windsor-PB North, West Windsor-PB South, Oak Knolls and Newark Academy.
Winning gold medals were sophomores Dana Leichter in women’s saber and Andrew Afable in men’s foil. Freshman Alex Brod took home silver in men’s foil. Bronze medals were won by freshman Drew Vreeland in men’s saber and sophomore Ben Goldman also in men’s saber.
Several Millburn upper-classmen, including Helen He, Julia Bruyzinski, Marianna D’Aries, Harry Glicklich, Walter Zhang, and Dan Dembner donated their time to help officiate, support their younger team-mates and make the tournament run smoothly.
Next up for Millburn Fencing is the State Squads to be held at North Hunterdon. Millburn boys epee and saber squads will be fencing Saturday, Feb. 25 and the girls foil squad on Sunday, Feb. 26.
