Millburn High Orchestra, Choruses Present Spring Concert

Free event is open to the public Thursday night.

The Millburn High School orchestra and choruses will present their Spring Concert Thursday night.

The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium.

The Ninth Grade Chorus, Cantica Nova, will perform two traditional American folk songs, “Shenandoah” arranged by John Purifoy and “Nine Hundred Miles” arranged by Philip Silvey as well as the traditional Spiritual “I’ve Got Peace Like a River” arranged by Kent Newbury.  The set is completed with Allan Robert Petker’s “Come to Me, O My Love.”

The Millburn Chorale will perform a set of 20th century choral compositions.  Included are “Ov’e, Lass’, Il Bel Viso?” by Morten Lauridsen, “Full Fathom Five” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Edward Elgar’s “My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land.”  The set will conclude with an a cappella cover of Beyoncé’s “Love on Top.”

The Chamber String Orchestra will perform the first movement from Serenade in C Major by Peter Ilich Tschaikovsky and the Symphony Orchestra will present the Overture to “Orpheus in the Underworld” by Jacques Offenbach and the Final movement of Beethoven’s epic Symphony No. 5.  Also on the program is an original piece composed by senior Christopher Li titled Tower of Light.

The Miller Chorus will perform a set featuring two international folk song settings, Feodoisy Rubtsov’s setting of “Bеники” and David Mooney’s “She Moved Through the Fair.”  Also included in the set are Morent Lauridsen’s “O Nata Lux” from his major work “Lux Aeterna” and Joshephine Poelintz’s arrangement of the tradition Gospel “City Called Heaven.”

The Chorus and Orchestra will combine forces to present “Coro di Zingari” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Il Trovatore,” most commonly known as “The Anvil Chorus.”  

Rodrigo Vega directs the choruses, and the orchestras are under the direction of Karen Conrad.  

The concert is free and open to the public.
