Miller Baseball Wrap-Up

A look back at the week in baseball.

The Millers varsity baseball team capped a strong week with a wild comeback victory Saturday afternoon in Maplewood.

Millburn (9-4) trailed neighboring Columbia (3-11), 6-2, and were down to their final two outs in the seventh inning before striking for 11 runs to roll to a 13-7 victory.

Junior outfielder Ben Dweck ignited the comeback when he ripped a three-run double to left center to give Millburn a 7-6 lead. Sophomore first baseman David Talpalar added a three-run double later in the inning and senior third baseman Anthony DelGreco capped the explosion with a long, three-run home run to left center that gave Millburn a 13-6 lead.

Junior pitcher Ethan Mintz (1-1) earned the victory on the mound with two innings of scoreless relief.

On Friday, Millburn slipped past host West Orange, 3-1, despite recording no hits through the first six innings of the contest. West Orange senior pitcher Adam Miller completely shut down the Millers attack, striking out nine and allowing just one walk in seven innings of work.

Millburn scored one run on a ground out by Talpalar and two others on errors. Junior pitcher Ian Riddell (3-1) matched Miller's brilliance on the mound, limiting West Orange (2-10) to five hits while striking out eight and walking one.

Millburn's lone loss of the week was at the hands of Seton Hall Prep on Wednesday in Millburn. Talpalar (2-1) took the loss on the mound while Millburn was limited to just two hits by Prep senior righthander Bobby Morgenroth (4-0).The Millers are back in action with four games this week.

That includes home division games today (Monday, April 30) vs. Montclair and Wednesday, May 2, vs. Livingston, and a Super Essex Conference crossover Friday, May 4, at Montclair Kimberley. The team will open play in the Greater Newark Tournament this Saturday, May 5, when it hosts Belleville at 2 p.m.
