Presentation to Focus on Abusive Teen Relationships

The program will alert parents how to identify abusive relationships in their children and prevent them.

One out of three teens is in an abusive relationship, and a speaker will tell Millburn-Short Hills parents how to pick up the signs and help their teens.

A speaker from the NCJW Linda and Rudy Slucker Center for Women will be at a combined meeting of M-MAC and the Millburn High School PTO on Monday. The speaker will start at 10:45 a.m.

Statistics provided by the center show one in three teens in an abusive relationship and 80 percent of their parents are unaware of it.

Parents will learn how to recognize the warning signs of dating abuse, how to talk to their child about developing healthy relationships and how drug and alcohol use impact relationships.

The multi-media presentation will alert adults to the dangers of power and control as a precursor to domestic violence and will provide tools to assist parents in guiding their sons and daughters to recognize and/or leave an abusive relationship.

The center's program reaches approximately 15 schools and 2,500 students, and the center's goal is to prevent teens from entering into abusive dating relationships and to assist students already involved in such relationships.
