South Mountain Students Visit Ogdensburg Zinc Mine

Students were able to take home several rocks from the mine.

Fourth graders at South Mountain School visited Sterling Hill Zinc Mines in Ogdensburg on April 2 to enhance their Earth materials unit in science class.

It was once a flourishing working mine until 1986 when mining zinc stopped being profitable. There are fluorescent rocks that can only be found at Sterling Mine.

The students took a tour of the mine, visited the display of "glow in the dark" fluorescent minerals, selected a fluorescent rock to take home, and went on a Rock Discovery and brought home 6 different rocks found around the mine.

It was a day enjoyed by all.
