8th Grade Girls Claim Third League Championship

Millburn 8th grade girls come from behind to win their third straight championship against Nutley.

The Millburn 8th Grade Girls claimed their third straight Suburban Essex League Champiionship on Thursday, with an exciting 30-27 win over host team Nutley. This was the third straight year Millburn and Nutley have met in the Championship game.

Millburn started out the game with poor shooting and trailed by 11 in the 1st half, and by 6 to start the 4th quarter. Trailing by 4 points with a minute to play, Liz Elder hit two 3-point shots, the last with 20 seconds left. Paige Krikorians free throw sealed the win with 5 seconds left.

Kelsea Brown and Jess Alexander controlled the defensive boards against a much bigger Nutley squad, and Millburns stiffling defense, led by Jenna Dembner and Lindsey Dinowitz held Nutley to only 4 points from the free throw line in the 4th quarter.

Paige Krikorian led all scorers with 11 points, Liz Elder had 9, Jess Alexander and Lindsey Dinowitz had 4 and Kelsea Brown had 2 points and 10 rebounds. Jenna Dembner, Ava Altenburger, Sara Mester, Jacqueline Marino, Elisa Dalton, Faith Belcuore and Lauren O'Neill were all key players in the championship run. 

Millburn finished their 3 year run with a 41-4 record in League regular season & playoffs.
