Serving good pub grub in an authentic environment, St. James's is a nice spot to catch up with friends over a pint or two. The bar top and tables are appropriately weathered, and true to the establishment's Irish roots—St. James Gate, Dublin—it serves Guinness, dark and delicious. It also has a nice selection of Irish Whiskey and single malt Scotch. Be sure to stop by on the weekends to catch some live music.

One of my favorite Irish Pubs in the state, the fire place tops it off. Good pub fare, cold beer, and great bartenders

***

No competition makes this place a 4, but the food and fair ambiance (except by the bar) are a 2. Good beer selections and bar staff, and located smack in the middle of town which makes for a great spot to visit before or after a movie at the theater up the street.

Lousy food, bad attitudes from bar staff and wait staff and the place is dirty...why would you want to eat at this place. The food is neither authentic Irish or good.

Went here on my second trip to Maplewood- Was in the process of house hunting. John the owner said hello to us- was extremely friendly and even offered some neighborhood advice. Good cold beer on Tap- Burger was as good as you can expect for a Pub Burger (I dont think they claim to be 5 stars for 8 bucks) But most importantly the servers and owner were welcoming...And as for the other poor reviews...excited about a NY Giants win and playing KISS 8 times in a row??!...In my book that ADDS stars to a bar review!

We've been going to "The Gate," (as we call it after our favorite pre-kids haunt in Brooklyn) since we moved here 3 years ago, and though it's not gourmet or perfect, we do love it. The mac n cheese is the only kind my picky 5 year-old will eat, they tolerate our loud children, and the burgers are just fine. We're almost always in and out in an hour, and the servers are all on top of how to treat a family with young kids. Sure I wish they had better beers on tap, but it's a perfectly good local dinner option. Go to NYC if you need better.

Bad service and overpriced food-most of which isn't prepared in house. My friend ordered the veggie burger and I noticed it was the Dr Prager's brand I buy at the supermarket! After being served a glass of wine I noticed there was cork floating in it and the bartender told me that "that's just what happens." Also, on another occasion I saw a cockroach crawling on the wall near the kitchen. Spend your money elsewhere!

I'll never again go to this restaurant again! The food as usual is mediocre but tonight it made my experience even worse! The music was so loud that you couldn't talk to anyone. When asked if perhaps they could just lower the music a little, the waiter said, the bartender was excited about the giants winning. Well he played the same Kiss song 8 times so loud that all the patrons were looking at each other wondering what was going on. Upon leaving suggesting to the hostess that perhaps that was a bit much, she gave the same answer, the bartender was excited! Well I gues the customers don't count. After all how many pubs are there in Maplewood? So now along with bad food, you can get a cocky attitude and go out to eat with a bunch of frat boys when you don't feel like cooking! Wow aren't we lucky! Don't ever go to this restuarant!

The food was pretty good, but Bangers and Mash were served without any onion gravy. When asked about gravy, the waitress suggested that some turkey gravy could be poured on top if we wished. Turkey gravy?? Authentic Irish pub??

I wish we had something like this in Millburn!
