Obituary: Allan "Rich" McAllister

A blogger for Patch and local volunteer passed away on Sunday.

[UPDATED: April 10 at 9:05 a.m. to include viewing, funeral arrangements] Allan "Rich" McAllister, 51, passed away on Sunday, April 8.  Rich wrote an inspirational blog for the Verona/Cedar Grove Patch, in which he described his life and the struggles he has faced. He was a quadriplegic, who lost his legs below his knees, the use of his hands, wrists and lower arms, as well as 60 percent of this throat but persevered. In one post, "Four Years Later, Here I Am", he details "496 straight days in three hospitals, two rehabilitation facilities, 22 operations and approximately $15 million dollars." I am shocked and so sad to hear of Rich's death. His blog on the Verona-Cedar Grove Patch lifted my spirits many times when I felt down. Former AFL/ABA Star Lonnie Wright Passes Away at 67

The South Orange resident and Newark native was the only man to play in both the ABA and the AFL in the same season.

How many men could say they intercepted a pass from Joe Namath or scored over Julius Erving?  And then how many can say they helped 2,000 minority youths in New Jersey from underprivileged backgrounds become medical doctors?  Well Lonnie Wright could say he did all of that and more in his illustrious life. Wright passed away in his South Orange home on Friday due to congestive heart failure.  He was 67. Growing up in Newark, Wright was a natural athlete from an early age.  He attended South Side High School, where he earned All-City, All-County, All-State and All-American honors in both football and basketball. He also starred for the track and baseball teams and was inducted into the Newark Hall of Fame in 1988. He then went to Colorado …

Whitney Houston Laid to Rest in Westfield

Procession arrived at noon Sunday for burial ceremony at Fairview Cemetery. Nearly 100 fans shouted 'We love you, Whitney' as hearse turned into the cemetery.

The vigil at Fairview Cemetery began at first light Sunday morning. There were no mourners, just reporters and photographers mingling congenially as they staked out a good spot for their reports back to the network morning shows or a position for the perfect photo of the funeral procession bringing Whitney Houston to the cemetery for her burial. Police officers arrived before daylight, at 6 a.m., to secure every possible corner of the Fairview property, from the Cranford border along Union County College to the south and E. Broad Street to the north. Obituary: Funeral Service for Frank J. Dasti, Sr.

Services will be held today or Frank J. Dasti, Sr., honored last year with the township's Community Service Award.

Funeral services for lifelong Millburn resident Frank J. Dasti, Sr., a father of eight who received the Millburn Township Humanitarian and Community Service Award last year, will be this morning. He was 55. According to obituary information from Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial funeral home, Dasti was the owner and operator of Dasti’s Ristorante in Maplewood and Linden for more than 20 years. Born in Summit, he was a lifelong resident of Millburn, an avid golf player and a devoted Little League coach and mentor in the league. MHS Musings: Remembering Fritz Jonach

MHS students, faculty and alumni share their memories of the beloved social studies teacher.

News that beloved teacher Frederick “Fritz” Jonach had died early Thursday  came as shock to Millburn High School students and faculty when it was announced  at school that morning. The 43-year-old was the father of two young children, and, according to MHS principal William Miron, Jonach had intended to take a personal day on Thursday so he could spend time with his family. A teacher at MHS since 1992, Jonach was a 1986 graduate of Millburn High School. He taught United States history, global issues, economics and film & society at MHS. He was also the advisor of many clubs (among them the Asian Cultural Club and the Interact Club), and coached the varsity bowling team.  Hundreds of students signed a memorial poster set up in the main …
