New Jersey’s Red Light Camera Program Has Failed

State Sen. Michael J. Doherty (R-23) pens letter to the editor.

To the Editor: A new report from the state Department of Transportation confirms what many opponents of red light camera ticketing systems have long suspected: cameras lead to more accidents, more injuries and greater cost. The report contains data showing that both the total number and total cost of crashes have increased at intersections after cameras were installed. The commonly stated goal of red light cameras is to reduce injuries from right-angle crashes, generally the most dangerous type of collision that results from running a red light. At the 24 intersections in New Jersey that have had cameras operational for at least one full year, the number of right-angle crashes decreased by 15%, from 60 to 51, when comparing crash data …

I am going to sue the state on NJ for these red light cameras because I have to slam the brakes when the light turned yellow which increases chances of rear end collision. Red light cameras make motorist more nervous and causes more crashes. Red light cameras need to be banned.   more ›

A Teacher Reflects, Plans for Monday and Beyond

Teacher and father, Doug Weisberger considers recent events, plans for future

Tomorrow will be a difficult day. Just like after 9/11, when we welcomed children back to school, who had friends and neighbors who had suffered a tragic loss, we will once again be taking special care of your children. Your children’s teachers are “first line responders” in the sense that they look out for your child’s emotional and physical well-being. I can only imagine that the teachers and administrators who lost their lives Friday did not think about doing something heroic, but acted on their instinct to protect the children; Just like each of you would risk your life for your child. As we look into your children’s eyes tomorrow, we’ll be checking to make sure that they feel safe and secure. I know that the school and the district …

Thank you for these words of reassurance, from teacher to parent. I am a parent of two young children. I did not comprehend or feel the depth of sadness that I have carried with me over the past days until I saw the faces of the teachers who perished while trying to save the children of Sandy Hook Elementary School. In the faces of the Sandy Hook teachers, I saw the faces of the teachers and …   more ›

Millburn Residents Against Proposed Stop and Shop

Millburn-Short Hills organization, Residents for Traffic Safety, write a letter to the editor on their stance against a new supermarket in a recap of their latest forum.

To Millburn-Short Hills Patch: About 20-25 residents attended the Residents For Traffic Safety forum on Thursday, November 29 to express their concerns, ask questions, and offer their ideas regarding the Stop & Shop development planned to be built on Millburn Avenue.  Generally, the comments centered around public safety and lowering of the quality of life in the area due to the greatly increased car and truck traffic that the supermarket will draw.  As resident Mary Fran Johnson stated, ”I can’t believe that an additional 6,000 cars a day would NOT have an impact on the quality of our neighborhood and town.” Attendees agreed that all trucks should not be required to enter and exit on Millburn Avenue and that there should be a traffic …

Holiday Shopping: Spending Limits For Kids’ Presents?

How much is too much to spend on children and teens? We want to hear your thoughts!

As the holiday shopping season goes into full swing, some people are maxing out their credit cards to pay for presents and others are setting budgets and sticking with them. Scour just about any Facebook stream or stop in a local coffee shop and chances are you’ll hear parents debating the merits of setting spending limits. Or, you'll hear them lamenting about just how much they've already spent. The ideas for a perfect limit do seem to vary rather greatly. Some parents say $100 per child is more than enough. Others tend to lean toward much more generous figures. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they unwrap gift after gift. And that’s what we want to hear from you about, Millburn! Do you set spending limits…

Is It Too Soon for Christmas Shopping?

It's not even Halloween yet and some stores are already putting up Christmas decorations. Is it too soon to deck the halls or are you ready for the 2012 Holiday Season to begin?

It's an annual question for merchants and shoppers: How soon is too soon to deck the malls and shopping centers for the Christmas holiday season? Some stores have already begun the process. Christmas music, decorations and layaway ads can already been seen in the shopping aisle at local stores. Halloween decorations still dominate, but signs of Christmas are already creeping in. So what do you think? When is too early for the Christmas shopping season to begin? Do the decorations and Christmas ads entice you to buy early or make you grit your teeth and wish for more time before the holiday rush begins?

Would Coffee Consumption Link to Glaucoma Make You Stop?

Harvard study links drinking three or more cups a day to development of 'exfoliation glaucoma' in study participants.

Excuse us while we sip from our third cup of the day. Whether you are a Patch editor or just an everyday joe, a lot of people enjoy their Morning Joe. Some like Joe in the afternoon, at night or, heck, how about all day? But, according to a New Jersey Newsroom article, those of us enjoying our coffee a little too often might be at greater risk of damaging our eyesight. Sorry, we couldn't read that -- we were wiping a smudge off our glasses. According to the article, citing both articles in Medical Daily and Science Daily, a study conducted at Harvard University has determined that people who drink three or more cups of coffee a day have a better chance of developing what is called "exfoliation glaucoma" than those who do not partake. Alas…

Stop the Speeding on Millburn Ave.

Letter to the Editor from the Short Hills Association.

A woman was hit by a car in Millburn recently while legally crossing Main Street in front of Starbucks.  On March 26 a 14 year old boy was struck by a car in downtown Millburn.  Students were hit by cars near the Millburn Middle School and on White Oak Ridge Road in May, 2011.  In February 2011 a 32 year old man was struck on Millburn Avenue near Campbell Road.  We all know that cars speed on Millburn Avenue in the downtown area every day. Why aren’t the police stopping speeders?  Why are drivers holding and using cell phones?  Why aren’t drivers checking the crosswalk before turning a corner?  What will happen when Stop & Shop opens a supermarket on Millburn Avenue? In the 1970’s and early 1980’s a policeman directed traffic at the …

We've also been frustrated with the town and police department's apparent lack of interest in speeding through the town. Cars zip up Cypress street from Millburn Avenue, and past the Wyoming School with little regard for the posted speed limit (25 mph) and the signs indicating that children play in the area. We've asked that they investigate speed bumps (no, although they are placed near other …   more ›

National Coming Out Day: Like it or Lump It

Local blogger and mom reflects on the heaviness and lightness of coming out.

Deborah Goldstein blogs at "Peaches and Coconuts."  It’s National Coming Out Day!  You may commence with your cheers, applause and wootage.  I never forget this day because I never stop coming out.  While other people may find the act of coming out to be liberating and fun, I always stammer and shvitz a bit wondering how the information I’m about to reveal will sit with the parent, coworker or 6 year old at the bus stop. 6 Year Old:  Where is Levi’s dad? Deborah:  Levi doesn’t have a dad.  He’s got 2 moms. 6YO:  What do you mean he doesn’t have a dad?  How can he be here without a mom and a dad? Wait, you are 6.  Are you telling me that you are confused because you have only ever been exposed to families with a mom and a dad and that you …

Peace Officer Calls for Teen Exposure to Positivity

Joseph Martino says exposure to "uplifting material" should come before "pent-up self-rage, anger and emotions get out of control."

To the Editor: From my experience as a retired New York City/State peace officer of 32 years I started to write many motivational quotations as a public service in the hope of reaching and inspiring young people to help overcome a lack of self confidence, low self-esteem and inferiority issues. There are numerous examples of great thought and inspirational quotes/ideas turning a troubled life around, preferably at the pre-teen period before their pent-up self-rage, anger and emotions get out of control.  Young people who bully are also harming themselves as much as their victims and may be former victims who may lack self-esteem and confidence themselves. They may verbally and physically attack anyone, or anyone that they know or …

Movie Review: Hotel Transylvania Is a Howl

A new animation about vampires is a twisted version of Twilight with a whole bunch of fart jokes. The good news is, it doesn't stink.

Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy ... they all come out in this 3D animation where monsters who have to get away from humans and the horrors of modern life head to Hotel Transylvania. Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) is the head of the house, and when his daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) longs for the human world, problems arise…causing quite a scare for the hotel guests. There are more than a dozen celebrity voiceover characters here, which does add to the mainly slapstick animation consisting of supernatural chase scenes and jokes involving excrement, ectoplasmic goo, rear ends and breaking wind. The film is a perfectly Halloween-themed movie for kids, but leaves very little for the adults. Its a fun film but the 3D really isn't …
