The Millburn Fire Department says residents may smell natural gas in the area similar to Thursday's gas purge.
PSE&G has scheduled another gas line purge in Livingston this weekend, which may result in an abnormal odor of natural gas around Millburn and Livingston similar to Thursday, according to officials. The gas release on Cit Drive was scheduled to start on Saturday around 8 a.m. and set to end at 6 p.m. Millburn Fire Chief Michael Roberts said he doesn't expect the purge to be the same as Thursday, which spurred many calls to town hall about the smell, but was unsure because current humidity. "It may linger around longer than usual," Roberts said. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, 34, charged with killing Joseph Galfy of Clark.
Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, dubbed "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker," was arrested Thursday evening at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Philadelphia by members of the Philadelphia Police Department, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said. McGillvary has been charged with the murder of Joseph Galfy, Jr., 73, which allegedly occurred in Clark on May 12. McGillvary will be processed in Philadelphia and returned to New Jersey in the coming days. His bail was previously set at $3 million, and he will be lodged in the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, Romankow said. Township says it should be a short-term issue which is believed to be from the purging a gas line early Thursday.
The purging of a gas line early Thursday spurred numerous calls to the township about an abnormal odor of natural gas inside and outside of buildings in Millburn-Short Hills, assistant business administrator Alex McDonald said. According to McDonald, the odor from this purge is moving west to east and should be a short-term issue. The gas release began around 7:30 a.m. and was scheduled to end around 10 p.m. with 150 pounds of gas planned to be released. The smell was also reported earlier in areas of Hanover and Florham Park as a result of a planned release by Williams/Transco in Livingston, according to Morris County Office of Emergency Management Director Jeffrey Paul. Millburn's fire inspector and his wife were indicted Wednesday for allegedly taking money from his grandmother's bank account and selling her possessions using power of attorney, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced. Peter Dicostanzo, 40, and his wife, Angela Discostanzo, 35, both of Nutley, are accused of withdrawing more than $150,000 from Dicostanzo's grandmother's bank account and selling more than $15,000 of her jewelry, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said in a release Wednesday. According to the release, Dicostanzo was given power of attorney over his grandmother's finances after his grandfather passed away in 2010. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. Police arrested a 27-year-old Brooklyn woman Saturday after she allegedly attempted to purchase a designer purse with a fraudulent credit card in The mall at Short Hills, Millburn police said. According to Capt. Michael Palardy, Starlett Davis was arrested on May 11 on fraud charges at about 2 p.m. Davis attempted to buy a Yves Saint Laurent Bo Sac De Jour purse, valued at $3,156.50, from Nordstrom with a Bank of America card containing a different name, police said. Davis showed the assistant manager a Florida driver's license with Davis's photo but with a different name and information matching the credit card, police said. Updated 6:30 p.m. A water utility truck spilled 30 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel onto Short Hills Avenue Thursday after it was hit by another car, according to township officials. A Toyota Scion collided with a New Jersey American Water utility truck around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Short Hills Avenue and Pine Terrace hospitalizing the driver of the Toyota, officials said. The crash, which appeared to be a head-on collision, caused the truck to dump up to 40 gallons of its diesel fuel onto the street and into sewers, Fire Chief Michael Roberts said. Woman took $900 in merchandise from Gucci, while man stole misplaced iPhone from Brookstone.
Millburn police are looking for a woman and a man in connection with two separate alleged shoplifting incidents this past weekend in the Mall at Short Hills, officials said. According to Millburn police, three women walked in to the Gucci store in the mall at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. One of the store's managers told police as the women walked around the store he saw one of the women take three belts and put them in her Louis Vuitton purse, each valued at $300. According to the report, the manager told one of his employees to lock the door leading back into the mall. The women walked to the exit, unlocked the door and walked out of the store into the mall.
