Miller Boys Basketball Has Historic Season

Millburn did more this season than any other team in school history.

The sting of sudden defeat is not often lessened by thoughts of past accomplishments. For a long time the members of the Millburn boys basketball team may ask themselves, "what if?" What if the ball had bounced this way instead of that? What else could we have done? What if the ref hadn't made that call? But hopefully some years from now when they look back on this season the boys will remember it for what they did accomplish instead of what they didn't. Without question, this year's Miller boys basketball squad is the greatest in school history. They racked up more wins (23) and advanced further in the county tournament and the state tournament than any others to don the blue and white uniform at Millburn High School. Their season ended a…

Miller Girls Should Return as Team to Beat

After losing in the state quarterfinals, it looks like Millburn should comeback stronger next season

If progress is the measure of where one is in relation to what one has been, then the Millburn girls basketball team made tremendous strides last season and looks strong to continue progressing next year. A season ago the Miller girls finished 4-19 and third worse in the Northern Hills Skyline Division. This year in the Super Essex Conference Colonial Division the girls ended with a 13-2 division record, were co-champs with Science Park and finished 18-7 overall, after starting 1-3. "It was successful as far as winning 18 games. But when you look at the losses, you have to shake your head a bit," said Millburn head coach Bill Drennan. Their season ended in the second round of the North II Group 3 state sectional final at home to Somerville…

Millers Fall in State Sectional Final

Millburn boys lose in Mendham, 66-62.

Millburn's run at history came to an end on Monday night in the North II Group 3 state sectional final at the hands of the Mendham boys, 66-62, in front of a sold out, standing room only crowd at Mendham High School. The Minutemen sank five first quarter three pointers and outscored the Millers 37-25 in the first two quarters and never trailed in the game. Millburn fought back in the second half, but a late rally fell just short. "I thought we lost the game in the first half. I thought our defense wasn't good, although, it seems like they made everything," said Millburn head coach Rodger Blind. "I was so porud of our kids in the second half. They were down 12 or 14, they could've given up, but they just kept chipping away, chipping away." …

Weekly Sports Rundown: Preparing for the Final

The Miller boys basketball team plays in the section final tonight.

If you're a Miller fan there are lost of reasons to rejoice for the boys basketball team. First, and most obviously, they advanced to the state sectional finals for the first time in school history. Second, they got a little lucky in the state semifinal game because Carteret couldn't hit a free throw all night. But finally, and most importantly, they'll be facing Mendham and not East Side Monday night in the state sectional final. I said last week I thought Mendham was the better match-up for Millburn, and somehow the Minutemen pulled off the upset in overtime against the Red Raiders. Now all I need is for the Millers to win and I'll look like a genius. But as they say, be careful what you wish for. Just because it was the best match-up …

Sixth Grade Girls Basketball Wins Championship

The Millburn Recreation 6th Grade Girls won the Suburban League championship with 26-24 overtime win against Nutley.

The Millburn Recreation 6th Grade Girls won the Suburban League championship with a thrilling 26-24 overtime win against previously undefeated Nutley on Saturday.  Millburn's win avenged their only defeat, a regular season overtime loss to Nutley.  Millburn finished with a 13-1 record. Millburn led 12-9 at the half, but Nutley started the second half on an 8-0 run.  Millburn recovered and was able to cut the lead to 17-16 entering the fourth quarter. Meg Damstrom hit a key throw in the final minute of regulation to tie the game at 21 and send it into overtime.  Paige Krikorian gave Millburn the lead in overtime on a breakaway layup, and Damstrom hit a key jump shot with 45 seconds left to give Milburn a 3-point lead.  After a Nutley basket…

Miller Boys Advance to Section Finals

Millburn boys basketball beats Carteret in the semifinals, 60-47, to advance to the section final for the first time in school history.

Millburn's dream season just keeps on getting more magical with each passing game. The Miller boys basketball team defeated the Carteret Ramblers 60-47 to advance to the North II Group 3 state sectional finals for the first time in school history Friday night. "I feel good, everyone did what they had to do, offensively, defensively, rebounding. I'm just proud of everyone," said Millburn co-captain Alex Rosenberg. Millburn outscored Carteret, 30-14, in the second and third quarters, including a 10-1 run to take a 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Millers had to play most of the fourth quarter with Rosenberg on the bench because he picked up his fourth foul in the closing seconds of the third. But because of Carteret's …

Millburn Boys Move on to Semifinals

A win on Friday pushes the Millers further in the state playoffs than ever before in school history.

The Miller boys basketball team has set itself up with a date with history with a win on Wednesday. Millburn defeated West Morris 63-51 in the quarterfinals of the North II Group 3 state sectional finals, advancing to the semifinals. No boys basketball team in Millburn history has ever been past the state semis. It was clear right from the start that this one was going to be a dog-fight. The teams spent most of the first half going back and forth in a one point game. There were eight lead changes in the first 11 minutes of play until co-captain Joe Kizel made a three pointer while drawing a foul to convert a four point play. It gave the Millers a 22-17 lead. Millburn never trailed again, despite a Wolfpack team, which refused to go away. "…

Great victory against a very physical team. I agree Tony Bai looked great. His improvement this year is remarkable. The rebounding by Miller was grade "A". Rosenberg and Kizel are a tandem Millburn has never seen in its history. Only suggestion to Alex is keep going hard to the basket especially when the guy guarding you has 4 fouls. Good luck tonight.  more ›

Miller Girls Eliminated from State Playoffs

Millburn shoots 25 percent from the floor in its quarterfinal loss.

The Miller girls season came to an end on Wednesday night at Millburn High School in the second round of the North II Group 3 state sectional playoffs. Fifth-seeded Somerville outscored the local girls 26-14 in the second half to win comfortably, 42-29. When the Millers have licked their wounds and take a look back on this one, they'll realize all they had to do was make a few more shots and a few more stops and the game would've been completely different. With 4:16 left to go in the first half, Miller freshman Jenny Smith made two free throws to put Millburn up 15-8. But just when it looked like Millburn was taking control of the game, their offense went ice cold, and Somerville went on a run. The Pioneers put together a stretch lasting …

Miller Girls Win First Round Playoff Game

They beat Scotch Plains-Fanwood 51-37 Monday night.

Behind a suffocating press and trap that put its opponent in a corner and didn't let it out, the Millburn girls' basketball team is moving on in the North 2, Group 3 playoffs. The fourth-seeded Millers led from start to finish en route to a convincing 51-37 first-round triumph over 13th-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood Monday night at home. The Millers will remain at home for a quarterfinal contest against fifth-seeded Somerville Wednesday. Somerville defeated 12th-seeded Nutley 46-34 Monday night. Millburn scored the game's first seven points and then, after giving up five, went on an 11-0 run to take control the rest of the way. Millburn had a 4-0 lead just 25 seconds in, prompting Scotch Plains to call a timeout that early with the Raiders …
