Historic House Has Revolutionary Legend

The Hessian House on Millburn Avenue is now the home of the Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey.

With famous Revolutionary War battles there comes legends, including the Battle of Springfield, which was fought in portions of what is now Millburn-Short Hills. One of those legends surrounds what is now referred to as the Hessian House on Millburn Avenue near the Maplewood border. The house, located at 155 Millburn Ave., was built around 1730. Legend has it, according to several sources at the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society, two Hessian soldiers fighting for the British decided they no longer wanted to fight in the war. The family living at the house then hid the two soldiers during the 1780 Battle of Springfield. Further, the two soldiers were taken to the military court in Orange and were released. It's believed they settled …

We paid at the gate to view the fireworks at the high school, but ended up retreating to Taylor Park because it was too loud for us and our 2-year old.   more ›

Local History: 4th of July Through the Years

Today's celebration is rooted in traditions years old in Millburn-Short Hills.

Millburn's proud patriot citizens are once again gearing up for another spectacular July 4 celebration and electrifying fireworks that will punctuate a day of family fun and games in Taylor Park. Local memorabilia in the collection of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society reveals that Millburn's important role in the 1780 Battle of Springfield seems to have inspired patriotic fervor for many decades of Millburn's Independence Day celebrations. In the first half of the 1900s, many years' worth of Millburn's July 4 celebrations were apparently run by the recreation department. In 1932 a bicentennial committee worked with the recreation department on a spectacular parade (see picture here), floats, pageant, and much more, to celebrate …

Fireworks are illegal in New Jersey, but Millburn will have its display on Sunday at the high school.

Plus there have been 3,000 reported injuries of children ages 15 years old and under due to fireworks. Millburn Fire Marshal Tom Pizzano said fireworks are illegal in New Jersey because of  the potential for fire and injury. 4th of July Ends with a Bang

A large crowd turns out for the fireworks.

The clear skies Saturday night meant that unlike the last few years, Millburn's fireworks would not be delayed or put off to a rain-date. Township residents camped out on the high school football field as early as 7:30 p.m. and waited for the show to begin. They were not disappointed. After a while of footballs and frisbees being tossed and listening to a DJ play both current and past pop music favorites, the show began at 9:30 p.m. For 45 minutes, the audience was dazzled with a pyrotechnic display of brilliant colors and deafening booms, while patriotic songs were played.
