In Millburn, the school district celebrated student work at the Paper Mill Playhouse on Monday. More than 150 artworks were displayed, representing Millburn's K-12 Art curriculum. It is an evening for honored students to celebrate with their families and teachers. Although March is Youth Art Month, Millburn Schools celebrate the arts on a daily basis all year. Wells Fargo Bank has donated two large paintings to the Arts Advisory Committee of Millburn-Short Hills, and they are now on display in the committee room at town hall. The donation was facilitated by the Downtown Millburn Development Alliance after Pat Malanga, of Wells Fargo, approached the organization about the donation. The two paintings by Lisa Ring Irvine are scenes of downtown Millburn and are dated 1998.

Some of the spaces downtown could use some art.
I was standing in the parking lot outside of Town Hall this week chatting with someone, who remarked on the fresh paint job on the building that houses, among others, Haagen Dazs, Millburn Music Center and the future home of Gina's Bakery. She said how the side of the building looks refreshed with its newly-painted white wall. "You know, that wall needs something like a mural," I said. "It would be the perfect spot for it." The wall is along an area where people walk frequently to get to parking, and people easily spot it as they drive through town. And apparently there once was a mural on the wall, although I don't remember it. There are a lot of empty walls like the one on the side of Haagen Dazs throughout downtown that look pretty …
A reception is scheduled for Friday at 4-6:30 p.m. and the exhibit will be open through Aug. 19.
More than 60 artists from northern and central New Jersey have work on display at the Renee Foosaner Art Gallery at Paper Mill Playhouse. The juried exhibit, the summer show of the Millburn-Short Hills Arts Center, will remain on view until Aug. 19. The public is invited to a free meet-the-artists reception from 4-6:30 p.m. on Friday. At 7:30 p.m. following the reception, the Paper Mill will offer the first of three performances of "New Voices of 2010" to close its summer conservatory program this year. Though historic records are sketchy, M-SHAC has been exhibiting its members' work at the Paper Mill for decades, at least since the Foosaner Gallery was established in 1982 when the playhouse reopened after a disastrous fire two years …

Julie Joy Saypoff, a local artist, teamed up with the Arts Advisory Committee to complete the outside art that could be the first of many for the committee.
A group of art enthusiasts gathered at the Millburn Public Library Friday night to dedicate a new piece of art. But it's not something that's hanging on the wall inside the library. It's a sculpture titled "Inspiration" created by Millburn artist Julie Joy Saypoff. It depicts a pile of books with a series of words in copper. Saypoff told the crowd gathered everyone's life in the community is centered on the library and the schools. It made perfect sense to her to have the sculpture there. Library Director Bill Swinson said it shows the culture and life of the community.

Julie Joy Saypoff, a local artist, teamed up with the Arts Advisory Committee to complete the outside art that could be the first of many for the committee.
There's a pile of books outside the Millburn Public Library, but it's not a stack someone easily can take home with them. It's a new sculpture completed by Julie Joy Saypoff, a Millburn artist, that was sponsored by the Arts Advisory Committee and several dozen local professionals and businesses, and it is to be dedicated in a ceremony soon. The sculpture, titled "Inspiration," depicts a stack of books and has a series of words. About a year ago Saypoff approached township officials wanting to install a sculpture outside the library. She said her family has been part of the library community for a long time, and she thought it was the perfect place for a sculpture. She recalled how locals had told her Millburn needed sculpture, especially …

What's there to do in and around town this weekend.
If you want music and fun outdoors, you can find it this weekend. The summer concert series in Taylor Park continues on Sunday with Van Martin and His Big Band. The band has toured all over the country since 1979 and their music will remind you of the stylings of Frank Sinatra. This free concert, sponsored by Arizona Iced Tea, is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. Maplewood hosts another year of its famous Maplewoodstock this weekend. This annual two-day festival features music, art, food (including Lalibella Ethiopian, Freeman's Fish Market, Sona Indian Restaurant, America's Pride Ice Cream) and stuff for the whole family (including bouncy rides, face painting, arts and crafts and kid-approved food). The festival begins on noon Saturday and Sunday…
