Patch Poll: Cast Your Vote for Best Picture in Sunday's Oscar Race

The Academy Awards are Sunday. What movie do you think should take home the big prize?

Brad, Angelina and George (as in Clooney) are some of the big-name stars set to walk the red carpet Sunday for the 84th annual Academy Awards. Although we won’t be there in person (maybe our Patch ticket got last in the mail?), we’ll be watching the actors—and silently judging their fashion choices—from the comfort of our own homes. Just because our readers aren’t the Hollywood insiders in charge of choosing this year’s winners (at least, we don’t think), that doesn’t mean your opinions don’t count. Of the films up for Best Picture, we want to know which ones you enjoyed the most. The nominated films are: The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War…

Millburn Co-Op Nursery School's New Mural

Artist and Millburn resident, Victoria Plummer, paints a local picture.

Victoria Plummer was asked for a favor and she just couldn't resist. Her children went to the Millburn Co-op Nursery School and even though they have gone on to elementary school, Victoria still felt an attachment to the co-op. So when the school asked her to paint the new mural by the entrance, she said yes. "Both my daughters went to the Millburn Co-op, and I have fond memories of our days there, so I was happy to help out when they asked me to do the mural." she said. It was time to replace the previous mural by another alumni parent, Joy Seigel, which had begun to peel. Adrienne Topping, co-director of the school, chose Victoria because "... she is a wonderful artist." When asked why the school wanted the mural, Topping replied, "The …

Arts Advisory Committee Honors Senior Artists

The committee hosts a show of the students' work at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

The Millburn Arts Advisory Committee celebrated Millburn High School students who received their annual scholarships Saturday night. The committee was formed in 1998, and the scholarships came out of the realization by committee member Larianne Barach that supplies for college freshman studying art can top $3,000 a year.  "This year we've been able to give $1,400 to 10 students," Barach said. "We have generous support from local organizations, like the Rotary Club and Jerry's Artist Outlet." Jerry's store manager Marshall Okin was on hand to explain to the winners how they can best utilize their supply funds. Past scholarship beneficiaries were among the crowd that gathered to celebrate the winners from 2010 at the Paper Mill Playhouse. …

How Much Is That Worth?: Art Committee Holds Appraisal Event

The committee raised $500 for its scholarship program with the event.

The Milburn-Short Hills Arts Advisory Committee raised more than $500 at an appraisal event Sunday afternoon at the Millburn Library. The money will go to art scholarships for students at Millburn High School. For a $10 donation, the more than 60 guests could have two items appraised by professionals from Nye and Company. Several brought close to a dozen items, organizer Laraine Barach said. The highlight of the day was when one man found out his first edition "Journey to the Islands of Western Scotland," published in 1775, is worth $6,000. Mark Leonard, who conducted the appraisal, said the owner has no intention of selling but was a bit shocked at the book's value. The 1775 first edition first folio was a great contrast to other items …

State Officials Warn of Possible Art Funding Cuts

Cultural leaders testify at the Assembly Tourism and Arts Committee meeting at Paper Mill about the importance of the arts to the state's economy.

While arts and tourism leaders emphasized how their industry makes significant cultural and economic contributions to the state, Assembly Tourism and Arts Committee members told them to be prepared for state aid cuts. The newly formed committee held its first meeting at the Paper Mill Playhouse on Wednesday afternoon, calling witnesses from several arts and tourism organizations. Among them was Paper Mill Executive Director Mark W. Jones. Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, R-21, who represents Millburn-Short Hills, serves on the committee. Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan, D-20, said often people lose perspective on how important the arts are to New Jersey. State officials focus on return on investment, and one of the strongest returns on …

New Music Album to Raise Autism Awareness

Millburn neighbors John O'Neil, Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes create "SingSOS, Songs of the Spectrum."

It’s fair to say nearly everyone has heard something about autism.  But it’s hard to understand. Millburn resident John O’Neil, a New York Times editor and author of the final article in a Pulitzer Prize-nominated series about autism, joined musicians and fellow residents Deena Shoskes and Jon Freed to create “SingSOS, Songs of the Spectrum" to raise autism awareness. “Music communicates where words alone can’t. Music marshals the force for what needs to be done," O'Neil said. "Music communicates where words alone can’t.” The album launched late last week, and the intention was to get the music out now so the Autism groups could use the album as a fund-raiser. “Our group’s primary goal is to spread awareness and get information to people …

Children's Library Mural Marks 20th Birthday

The mural was dedicated 20 years ago today.

Twenty years ago when the Berlin Wall was coming down, a different kind of wall was going up in the children’s room of the Millburn Public Library. On Nov. 18, 1989, the library dedicated the mural that is a part of the children's section. Up until then the children’s room had been decorated with paper posters, which kept falling down because they wouldn’t stick to the cinder block walls. Marilyn White, the mural's creator, said she received a phone call from the Friends of the Library asking if she knew any muralists. The friends wanted to give a gift to the children’s room. Then Children’s Librarian Miriam Bein had suggested that they call White. White did know of a muralist: Herself. She had created murals for private homes as well as…
