The group has a reading Thursday at 7 p.m. in Madison.
The poets were gathered around the table at the Millburn Public Library in October, reviewing their latest work. They debated if a word should have been left in a poem about Penn Station. And there was one poem fitting with the season. Odarka Stockert, a Millburn resident, apologized for her poem, which had vampire themes. "It is October," she said. Stockert and her fellow poets are part of the South Mountain Poets, a group that meets monthly at the Millburn Public Library to review each other's work. They come from throughout the area, including Millburn-Short Hills, South Orange, Summit and West Orange. While there are 68 people on the mailing list, there are 12 current active members. Each month they bring copies of their poems, share …

Adam Warner explains options volatility trading in a new book published by McGraw Hill.
Short Hills native Adam Warner has first hand knowledge that the best way to get a book published is to blog. Warner’s blog DailyOptionsReport.com forms the basis for his newly published book, "Options Volatility Trading, Strategies For Profiting From Market Swings." When a colleague was approached by the publishing company and asked to write a book about market volatility, he knew that he wasn’t the right person for the task and recommended Warner. Warner is not only the brains behind DailyOptionsReport.com and a contributor, as options editor, to Minyanville.com, but he also has been an independent market maker on the New York Stock Exchange. Options Volatility offers a simple and straight forward approach to options and volatility …

Gene Lowinger spoke about his life as a bluegrass fiddler.
Millburn resident Gene Lowinger explored his world that led him to Nashville and home in a talk about his latest book at the Millburn Public Library Wednesday night. He welcomed the guests to the library at the door as they arrived to hear about his book, "I Hear a Voice Calling: A Bluegrass Memoir." The audience was tapping their feet to bluegrass music as it played along to the video slideshow of Lowinger's photographs of Bill Monroe, a famous bluegrass musician. He creatively combines his photographic skills, his vision of Bill Monroe and his own life into his new book. The audience learned about the moments, the people, the music and the words that formed Lowinger's life as a bluegrass fiddler living in Millburn. From hearing the …

Short Hills native Alfred Martino takes a new turn in writing his third novel.
When Short Hills native Alfred Martino was residing in Los Angeles in the early 1990s he had a semi-epiphany. “When you live in L.A., you have to write a screenplay,” Martino, 45, said jokingly. “I’m not sure if you’re allowed in L.A. without writing a screenplay.” Despite starting a successful audiobook company—Listen & Live Audio—that's published well over 200 titles, Martino found his true passion while residing on the West Coast. Albeit it wasn't screenplays, it did involve pen-to-paper interaction. “I love my business, love owning a company that allows me to be creative,” said the 1982 Millburn High School graduate. “But someday, I hope to write full-time and to have a book come out not every four to five years, but maybe one a year…

An expert on the series says the themes speak to a non-Christian audience too
It took 30 years of correspondence with a friend and one simple request for noted Harry Potter expert John Granger to appear at the Christ Church in Short Hills Wednesday night. Granger, author of "Looking for God in Harry Potter," spoke in front of 45-50 people, varying in age from young to old, about the Christian themes in the well-known Potter novel series. “(Harry Potter) is the shared text of this generation,” said Granger, who spoke at the church because former high school classmate and Christ Church member Sam Reckford—Reckford and Granger attended New Hampshire’s Phillips Exeter Academy—thought it would be worthwhile for him to do so. “(Potter) is the bridge across every diversity, creed, race and geographic status. They all know …

Local children's author takes stories to the web
Five years ago Daniel Errico was working in finance and engineering, but something just wasn’t quite right. He knew it wasn’t really what he wanted to do. The Short Hills native started writing when he was 18 years old and had found what would be his real passion. “It was something I always wanted to do and I finally embraced it,” Errico said. “I never thought of myself as a writer, but I had all these ideas. I thought I’d get them out before I go insane.” Errico said he didn’t have many close literary influences while growing up, but he was always a fan of Dr. Seuss. He particularly loved “The Butter Battle Book.” “Not many people know it,” he said. “It is an analogy for the Cold War and weapons of mass destruction. It really helped to …
