Do you remember your favorite lunch box? Today's kids have as many options as ever but nothing will take the place of the Partridge Family or Scooby-Doo.
Lunch boxes have changed in design and shape over the years, but the basic idea is the same. Along with space inside for a cold drink, sandwich and snack, the cover is devoted to a favorite cartoon, character, TV show or even a favorite movie. That's why Justin Bieber and Darth Vader and Japanese cartoon characters are staring out at shoppers from the shelves of Target. Back in the '70s, the lunch boxes were aluminum. In the '80s, they gave way to plastic. Vintage lunch boxes now are highly collectible. They are displayed as collections in people's homes, and sometimes they get their own art gallery shows. Do you remember a favorite lunch box? What was it? Have a picture handy? Share it with Patch!

Fall programs will keep kids busy during the new school year.
The Millburn Library is getting ready for fall with some new back-to-school programs keeping younger residents throughout town busy. The library's fall story time program will kick off the new school year starting in October. Registration begins Sept. 10 for kids from 9-months-old to 5-years-old. "The goal is getting them ready to go to school," said one of the organizers of children's programs at the library, Patt Kent. Kent runs the program along with Jennie Ferraro until Thanksgiving, which parents can sign their kids up for either Monday or Tuesday time slots. For some of the older kids, the library is also starting a movie and game night on Saturdays once a month. The first Saturday night event will be in September with a game …

The National Council of Jewish Women recently held its fourth annual Back 2 School Store benefiting more than 500 local economically disadvantaged children. The youngsters, ages 5 through 11, enjoyed shopping cost-free for an array of brand new clothes, school supplies and personal care items at B’nai Shalom in West Orange on Sunday. “Watching the looks of pure joy and excitement on the children’s faces truly put everything into perspective for me,” said Karen Cherins, president of NCJW Essex Section. “Many of these youngsters have never had anything but hand-me-downs and this year they can proudly sport their own new clothes and supplies as they go back to school fully equipped to learn.” The Back 2 School Store was set up to look …

Sales expected to jump for parents with children in grades K-12 and college students.
Is it too soon to talk about school? Well, one survey suggests that consumer spending for school supplies and clothes will jump in the coming months. The average person with children in grades K-12 is predicted to spend $688.62 on their children this year, up about 12 percent from last year, according to a survey and analysis for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch. The survey included 8,509 respondents and was conducted in July. Total spending by parents for children in grades K-12 is expected to be $30.3 billion. Not surprisingly, a large majority of the consumers with school-aged children surveyed -- 84.8 percent -- said the economy will be a factor in how they shop. Parents surveyed said they would spend the most on …

It's the first day of school for the 2010-11 year in Millburn-Short Hills.
The first day of school across Millburn-Short Hills went smoothly on Tuesday, although there were some hiccups. "It's been going great," Schools Supt. James Crisfield said Tuesday afternoon. It's his first back to school as Millburn's superintendent. At the high school, seniors arrived in their decorated cars. A car made to look like a dinosaur took first place in the annual competition. And the seniors sat for their annual class portrait. Crisfield said the other schools had their typical "first day of school excitement." There were some hiccups along the way, including scheduling and a busing issue with the middle school. Students in the Wyoming area never were picked up for school Tuesday, and Crisfield said the issues has been resolved…

My very first lunch box was white vinyl and had the Banana Splits on it. Oh how I loved that lunch box. I remember I cried when the plastic handle broke. My mom even taped it so I could continue to use it. Eventually it went the way that most well loved lunch boxes did, to lunch box heaven. I have seen few on eBay but the one in really good condition was going for $475. I did love that lunch box …   more ›
