Millburn Police Offer Bicycle Safety Advice

May is National Bicycle Month, and police say cyclists should wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.

Several years ago Police Chief David Barber was on a training bicycle ride for the Police Unity Tour in Perth Amboy when he was hit by a car. He fell over the hood of the car and eventually on his shoulder and his head. "It sounded like I was inside a bell," he said. But Barber was wearing a helmet and walked away from the crash without a concussion, although he was sore the next day. "I'm not sure if I would be dead or seriously hurt," he said of what would have happened had he not been wearing a helmet. "You can't plan for something like that. You need to dress appropriately every time. I was able to get up and walk away." May is National Bicycle Month, and with Memorial Day here on Monday plenty of people will be pulling their bicycles …

Get Your Bike Ready for Riding Season

May is National Bicycle Month, and the warmer weather means people are getting ready to cycle.

Now that the weather has officially turned to spring,  bicyclists of all ages are dreaming of taking to the streets and parks. It means cyclists need to get their bikes ready for the season. Matt Sordill, High Gear Cyclery service manager, said getting a yearly bike checkup is vital. "People bring in bikes that are in very questionable condition. These bikes shouldn't be on the road, they're dangerous, " he said. At the very least, he cautions you need to check that all the nuts and bolts are tight—that means inspecting the bike's pedals and wheels. It's also important to eyeball your tires to make sure that they have the proper tread and aren't dry rotted or cracked. Make sure tires have the correct pressure too. Sales manager John Martin…

Committee Approves Bike Path

The path will follow Glen Avenue from Brookside to the Maplewood border.

After five years of work, Millburn will have its first bicycle path. The Township Committee approved the path during its meeting Tuesday night. The path was part of the consent agenda—which is a group of resolutions that are approved together—and was not discussed. There had been questions about the plan as recently as late last week, but apparently they had been resolved in time for Tuesday's meeting. The path will follow Glen Avenue from Brookside Drive to Ridgewood Road at the Maplewood border. A leg would follow Lackawanna Place to connect to downtown. The plan that was approved will not include striping on the side of the road, although it will include signs, street markings and speed tables. The cost of the project, which is included…

Bicycle Path Questions Still Remain

The Township Committee will take up the matter again Tuesday.

After years of work, the proposed bicycle path that would link Millburn with Maplewood may be coming to a vote at the next Township Committee meeting. The committee heard a presentation about the path during its July meeting, and put off a vote until August because of questions. Tom McDermott, a committee member, wanted to hear the police's opinion about the width of the road. McDermott said he's not sure if his questions about safety have been answered and hopes there is a discussion at the meeting Tuesday night about the issues. "We have plenty of bikers in town," he said. "We just have to be cautious about what we endorse." The committee would be encouraging people to bike on Glen Avenue, he said. It's not completely safe now because it…

Didn't we just have a car roll over on Glen Ave recently? The curve at Sagamore is notorious for accidents, and the traffic at the T by the First Aid Squad is brutal during rush hour and when commuters try to leave the parking lot. I think a bike lane is an answer to a question that no one is asking.   more ›

Bicycle Network Questions Raised

There are concerns about safety about the width of the road.

It'll be August before the Township Committee moves forward with a proposal to create a bicycle network along Glen Avenue. The committee heard a report from a consultant hired to plan the network Tuesday night, but some committee members had questions about safety that need to be answered before a decision on moving forward is to be made. The plan would create the network between Brookside Avenue and Ridgewood Road with a spur linking to downtown via Lackawanna Avenue. There is potential for a link to Maplewood, which recently hired Urbana Consulting to create the link. The first phase of the bicycle network would stripe the shoulder of the road, although there is no specific bicycle lane planned. A specific lane would be created near the …
