Black Friday Lines Diminish After Daybreak

Willowbrook frenzy fades early Friday morning.

Willowbrook Mall at 6 a.m. was almost quiet. Many of the overnight bargain hunters had gone home or to the next site. Black Friday shoppers had waited for hours late Thanksgiving night for the mall's opening at midnight.

Black Friday Crowds Steady at Short Hills, Livingston

Essex County malls busy, but not overcrowded most of the day.

Essex County's two malls—Short Hills and Livingston—had a steady stream of shoppers throughout Black Friday. However, staggered store openings helped to keep the lines to a minimum Friday morning in Short Hills. By the early afternoon, Livingston was busy, but not overcrowded.

'Black Friday Creep' Spurs Online Petition Drives to Save Thanksgiving

Thousands are signing an online petitions against Black Friday store opening hours that have been pushed into Thanksgiving Day.

The trend for stores to open earlier and earlier to take advantage of Black Friday sales—even to the point of opening in the evening on Thanksgiving Day—has prompted an online petition drive to give Thanksgiving back to employees and their families. The original petition was reportedly created by a Target employee upset that the retail giant is opening on Thanksgiving and requiring employees to work instead of spending time with their families. Target stores will open their doors at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. As of Tuesday morning, there are more than 179,000 signatures on the petition. (Check out the petition here.) A press release from Change.org reported that they have seen dozens of new petitions pop up about Black Friday hours. "…

Short Hills Mall Welcomes Shoppers on Black Friday

Unlike other area shopping centers, shoppers were sparse at the mall this morning; but filled up in the afternoon.

There were no signs of Black Friday's deal-busting madness at The Mall at Short Hills Friday morning. Shoppers at the upscale mall in northern New Jersey walked casually from store to store and carried few bags during the hours that were crowded and hectic at other malls and big box stores. The only difference from a regular shopping day? It was 8 a.m., two hours before the mall usually opens.  At some stores, Black Friday offered shoppers unprecedented deals if they made their purchases before 9 a.m. or, in some cases, noon. At the Macy's in Short Hills, employee Kathy Graul, of Union, said, "It's definitely not Target and Kohl's, but I think for the people who shop in the Short Hills Mall, the sales are good." She said some customers …

Mall at Short Hills Traffic Up for Black Friday

The mall's general manager estimated an increase of 8-10 percent and noticed people buying for themselves for the first time since 2007.

Mike McAvinue, The Mall at Short Hills general manager, didn't have the luxury of a long Thanksgiving weekend. "I've been here since 5 a.m," he said. "The reaction I'm getting from retailers as I walk around is a big thumbs up, but they've been too busy to stop and talk." McAvinue estimated mall traffic is up 8-10 percent from last year.  He attributes the increase to pent up demand, and more consumer confidence.  "Luxury brands are popular this year," he said "Higher end watches are and cashmere goods have been doing well."   A reassuring trend McAvinue has noticed is the resurgance of self purchasing amongst Friday's shoppers—they're buying goods for themselves as well as gifts for others.  "I haven't seen that since (2007)," he said.  …

Shoppers Find Bargains Galore On Black Friday

It was a brisk day of sales at the Mall at Short Hills and in downtown Millburn.

Steady and growing is how many Millburn merchants characterized Black Friday sales that usher in the momentum of the holiday buying season. At the Mall at Short Hills the halls were filled with happy, bag-toting shoppers.  Although the Short Hills-based luxury stores, for the most part, aren’t known for the kinds of "door buster" super sales that are found at the big box stores, there were many bargains to be found. Ann Taylor, for example, had 40 percent off everything in the store, Guess offered 60 percent off all reduced merchandise for men and women as well as having a professional DJ, which created a party atmosphere. There was a short line outside of the Apple Store, which was offering hard-to-find, albeit small discounts on many …
