The president approves federal disaster designation for portions of New Jersey, including Essex County.
Millburn and Essex County could be getting some money to help with snow clean-up costs from the December blizzard, thanks to U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez. Essex was among 13 New Jersey counties named in a federal declaration. Some received more than 2 1/2 feet of snow from a massive snowstorm that blanketed the state on Dec. 26. The two senators applauded President Barack Obama for approving a federal disaster designation that will free up federal dollars to help New Jersey. The money will help with clean-up costs by reimbursing state and local emergency management agencies that worked on the storm. “I work hard in Washington to make sure emergency funding is available to our communities when disaster strikes and I …

They've submitted an application to the state if the federal disaster aid is approved.
Township officials are seeking reimbursement for some of the money spent on cleaning up following the December blizzard. Lt. Peter Eakley, township deputy emergency management coordinator, said kthe town has submitted information to state officials seeking reimbursement, and it will be forwarded to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Township officials have submitted an estimate of $75,000, but Eakley said all of the money may not be eligible for reimbursement. In December Gov. Chris Christie asked the president to declare the aftermath of the Dec. 26 blizzard a disaster so the state would be eligible for the federal funding. Nearly two feet of snow fell on Millburn-Short Hills during the storm. “My pledge is to do all we can to help …

The mall closed early on Sunday and was closed on Monday, but people were back shopping on Tuesday.
The day after Christmas is typically a big day for people to head to the Mall at Short Hills to make returns and take advantage of sales and other deals. But last Sunday the snow was falling by noon in what was the start of a blizzard that dumped nearly two feet of snow on Millburn-Short Hills. It meant people headed home long before the mall was to close, and mall officials had to get ready to rebound after the storm. "We saw fairly decent traffic early, but by 3 p.m. folks were heading out," said Michael McAvinue, Mall at Short Hills general manager. And the mall was closed by 6 p.m., along with several of the department stores. The tough decision was if the mall should open on Monday. Typically mall officials can close off the surface …

The focus is on removing snow from the downtown area and the 500 block of Millburn Avenue and making sure sidewalks are clear.
Snow removal was continuing throughout the township on Wednesday, but things were getting back to normal after last Sunday's blizzard. A crew was removing snow along Essex Street on Wednesday morning, causing traffic traveling westbound to be stopped at times in the vicinity of the Millburn Avenue split. Snow had been removed from some, but not all, of the downtown parking lots over night. Snow also was removed from the south side of Millburn Avenue, opening up the on-street parking there. Police Lt. Peter Eakley, deputy township emergency management coordinator, said the township was in good shape with some work needing to be finished in downtown and on the Short Hills end of Millburn Avenue. The plan is for the work to be completed …

The family was ready for baby Daniel's birth, they just didn't count on the storm.
Daniel Christopher Belamour Mann, born in the front seat of his parents' car the morning after the blizzard, "is a miracle that I will never be able to explain to anyone," said his father Fredrick Mann. But on Tuesday, just one day old, his family was telling their story over and over again, to family and friends and members of the media, who crowded their room at St. Barnabas Medical Center, pinning tiny microphones in their collars to catch every word. The story began at 5:30 a.m. Monday when Joan Pierre-Mann woke with contractions. They talked to their doctor, Gwen David of West Orange, and turned down her advice to take an ambulance. "I didn't know we would have the baby literally at that moment," recalled Fredrick Mann, in a telephone…

First came the snow, now comes the sledding.
After spending the better part of two days inside due to a blizzard that dumped about two feet of snow on the region, kids were out on Tuesday to have some fun. They took to the hill along Brookside Drive in South Mountain Reservation for some sledding fun on Tuesday. There was a variety of sleds and even snowboards, and in some spots they created bumps to "catch some air."

DPW crews continue to plow streets as people try to get out after the storm that dumped about two feet of snow on the township.
After a day of snow and a day of digging out, Millburn-Short Hills residents were getting out on Tuesday. Streets were busy with cars, and people were walking around downtown on Tuesday morning. Many local businesses, which had opened late or stayed closed on Monday, were back open on Tuesday. The Millburn Public Library, which was closed on Monday and had been through the holiday weekend, was scheduled to open at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Like the acting governor did with the state, Millburn's emergency management coordinators lifted the state of emergency on the township, according to police Lt. Peter Eakley, deputy emergency management coordinator for the township. The ban on on-street parking has been lifted, but Eakley said officials are …

Millburn OEM is reporting there are spots with six feet of snow because of drifting.
Millburn-Short Hills residents who are getting ready to dig out on Monday will find about two feet of snow waiting for them. The township received over 20 inches of snow during Sunday's blizzard, according to Police Lt. Peter Eakley, deputy emergency management coordinator. There are places with six feet of snow because of the drifting, he said. The National Weather Service is reporting 22.5 inches of snow fell in Millburn-Short Hills. "Well the storm certainly lived up to its hype," said David A. Robinson, state climatologist. "Not a record breaker in terms of snowfall, but I suspect that it will be close to if not a top 10 amount for Essex County, looking at observations over the past century. There are many disabled vehicles …
