Second Grade Class Sings to School Board About Respect

A second-grade class from Hartshorn Elementary School presented their retelling of the story 'Stone Soup' as an international project with a Canadian school.

The Millburn Board of Education was given a look into a unique project Monday night that a second-grade has been working on at Hartshorn Elementary School — a musical retelling of 'Stone Soup' as an international project.  "What started with this little video conference with this school in Canada turned into this really unique project," Eric Demel, the elementary school's computer science teacher and video conferencing corodinator, said. Using its studies on folklore and fairy tales the class retold the story "Stone Soup" in song, the second-grade teacher Amy Blake explained. The project was an international collaboration with a school in Manitoba, Canada. The Canadian school put out a calling for a project that would retell a story …

John Westfall-Kwong Appointed to School Board

Millburn Board of Education nominates, unanimously approves new member to fill the open seat left by Jean Pasternak.

Following a unanimous vote Monday, the Millburn Board of Education appointed John Westfall-Kwong to fill an open seat on the township school board.  "I'm just delighted to be joining the board and very grateful that they appointed me," Westfall-Kwong said. "I also want to recognize the other people who ran with me. They are doing great things around the community, especially with the strategic planning." The appointment fills the vacancy left when Jean Pasternack resigned in February to focus on family matters. Westfall-Kwong will retain the seat for the remainder of the term, which expires on Jan. 6, 2014. To continue for another term on the board, he will to run for election in November. On Monday, Millburn's Board of Education Meeting is scheduled for 7:45 p.m in the Education Center. School Budget Approved with 2 Percent Tax Increase

Proposal would raise Millburn-Short Hills taxes $15 per $100,000 of assessed property valuation.

In a 7-1 vote, the Millburn Board of Education approved an $81,806,821 2013-14 school budget that includes a 2-percent tax increase. The tax increase will increase taxes for residents about $15 per $100,000 property valuation. For example, for a township home assessed at $1,000,000, taxes will increase an estimated $151. The budget is a $2.9-million increase from last year's budget, which had one of the lowest tax increases in recent history at 0.65 percent. The budget includes 11 new full-time equivalent staff positions, mainly at Millburn High School in which 4.8 teachers will be added. The Millburn Board of Education is slated to vote on the 2013-14 school budget at a public budget hearing on Sunday, March 24 at 7:45 p.m. in the Education Center.  Full agenda attached.  The meeting was rescheduled from its original Monday date because of the religious holidays during the following week. The meeting is open to the public and the adminstration encourages residents to attend and share views. Millburn has released a budget newsletter for residents to review.

Five candidates vying for the seat left vacant after Millburn Board of Education member Jean Pasternak resigned at the Feb. 11 meeting made presentations to the school board and residents at Monday night's meeting. Who do you think should fill the open seat?
