Harry Potter's Christian Themes Discussed

An expert on the series says the themes speak to a non-Christian audience too

It took 30 years of correspondence with a friend and one simple request for noted Harry Potter expert John Granger to appear at the Christ Church in Short Hills Wednesday night. Granger, author of "Looking for God in Harry Potter," spoke in front of 45-50 people, varying in age from young to old, about the Christian themes in the well-known Potter novel series. “(Harry Potter) is the shared text of this generation,” said Granger, who spoke at the church because former high school classmate and Christ Church member Sam Reckford—Reckford and Granger attended New Hampshire’s Phillips Exeter Academy—thought it would be worthwhile for him to do so. “(Potter) is the bridge across every diversity, creed, race and geographic status. Short Hills Author Releases New Book

Dara Horn will celebrate "All Other Nights" with a party at Martini's

Short Hills native and author Dara Horn moved back to her hometown from Manhattan late last year, and now her latest book is hitting the bookstore shelves. She will launch her new book, "All Other Nights," Wednesday from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at a party at Teddy's Martini Bar & Bistro in Millburn., which is open to the public. Horn, one of Granta Magazine's Best Young American Novelists for 2007, will be signing and discussing the novel. This book is historical fiction, and Horn mines the past for characters and settings, specifically Jews and the Civil War. Former gentleman-in-waiting Jacob Rappaport runs away from his traditionalist family and his arranged marriage to join the Union Army. We meet him traveling to New Orleans during Passover …
