DiVincenzo: Downtown Bridge Project Could Be Done in January

Also, he said he would hold a meeting at Town Hall for business owner and residents to ask questions and provide feedback on the project.

While the deadline for the Millburn Avenue bridge to be completed is in March, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo expects the work to be done around the end of January. DiVincenzo held a press event to answer questions regarding the $1.7 million project to demolish and replace the bridge on Thursday, and area business owners and leaders also attended the event in front of the Millburn Deli. The bridge is located just east of Main Street. DiVincenzo pointed to his record as county executive of projects being completed earlier than they are expected to be done. He said county officials are working to have the bridge itself done by the end of January or early February although sidewalk work would still need to be done. "We are going to …

Offcials Will Monitor Downtown Traffic Situation

A fence will be put in place to control pedestrian traffic, but township officials will watch to see if changes can be made.

A fence will be in place to control pedestrian traffic along Millburn Avenue near the construction zone, but township officials will be monitoring the situation for possible changes in the future. Local officials met with county and police officials about a fence to be installed along Millburn Avenue from Main Street to Tinga. Officials have said the reason for the fence is because of the expected increase in pedestrian traffic downtown when school opens on Tuesday. The original plan was to install an orange construction fence, but Daniel Baer, Township Committee member serving as liaison on the bridge construction project, said a metal fence similar to those used at concerts will be used. It would be more transparent and also can be moved…

Local Officials to Meet with County on Millburn Avenue Fence

Local officials have alternative plans to the snow fence to control pedestrian traffic in the construction zone.

Township officials will be meeting with county officials on Thursday morning about a proposal to install a snow fence along Millburn Avenue to control pedestrian traffic. County officials and police have proposed installing a fence along Millburn Avenue between Main Street and Tinga as part of the downtown bridge construction project. Officials are citing an expected increase in downtown pedestrian traffic and keeping them safe after school opens as the reason for the fence. The fence is expected to be installed before school opens Tuesday. Daniel Baer, the Township Committee member serving as liaison on the project, said he and John Buccholz, Downtown Millburn president, will be meeting with county officials on Thursday morning. "We've …

Fence Proposed to Control Downtown Pedestrian Traffic

Safety concerns as school gets read to open are cited as the reason for the fence along Millburn Avenue in the construction zone.

If you cross in the middle of the block on Millburn Avenue near the Millburn Deli and Curate, a fence could be blocking your path soon. County officials and police are planning to install a snow fence between Main Street and Tinga in order to control pedestrian traffic. Officials are saying the move is because school is to open soon and pedestrian traffic downtown is expected to increase. It remains unclear when the fence could be installed, but officials say it would be before school opens next Tuesday. County officials are overseeing a project to remove and replace the bridge on Millburn Avenue just east of Main Street. The sidewalk on the south side of the road has been closed during the first phase of the construction, and people are …

Does anyone know the actual funding source for this project as I assume it is based upon some State or Federal grant provided to the County for this purpose? As for cross-walks, they do little use when the law is not enforced. I was almost side-swiped by a driver this weekend while crossing Millburn Ave at the Main St. intersection to get to Coco while walking with my 3-year old. I can count on …   more ›

Police Issue Over 200 Left Turn Tickets

There is a no left turn from Millburn Avenue onto Main Street as part of the bridge construction project.

Millburn police issued 224 tickets to motorists who turned left from Millburn Avenue onto Main Street on Thursday and Friday. A no left turn is in place at the intersection due to the downtown construction project. The restriction is expected to be in place for the first phase of construction. On Thursday and Friday officers were at the intersection issuing tickets to people turning left. Officers issued 148 citations on Thursday and 76 on Friday, according to Police Capt. James Miller. He said the tickets were issued as part of a special enforcement, but officers can issue tickets an any time for the no left turn. He also did not rule out another special detail could happen in the future. "It depends upon the circumstances and our …

Turn Left onto Main Street Downtown, Risk a Ticket

Police are enforcing the no left turn from Millburn Avenue onto Main Street, which is part of the traffic changes due to the bridge project.

A driver attempted to make a left-hand turn from Millburn Avenue onto Main Street Thursday morning, but he stopped to allow pedestrians to cross the street. A driver stopped for the light on Main Street waved to him to say not to make the left hand turn. But he turned. That's when he was stopped for a ticket from police stationed there. Drivers aren't supposed to be making left turns onto Main Street from Millburn Avenue as part of the new traffic pattern for the downtown bridge construction project. There are signs posted in the area about the traffic change. Police, though, have received a number of complaints from pedestrians and drivers about people making the left turn, said Police Capt. Greg Weber. It's part of why officers were out …

A couple of weeks ago the signage was pretty questionable as there was only the portable sign and drivers tended to make a left onto Main Street. They have added some new signs but are they effective and drivers are ignoring the new traffic pattern or is the signage placed poorly? As a resident that works and walks around downtown a lot, I believe there is a bigger problem isn't people making a …   more ›

Editor's Notebook: More Police Needed at Construction Zone

With the shut down of the bridge project this week, there's no police officer in the vicinity to direct traffic and help people cross the street.

Have you tried to park in the lot adjacent to the Millburn Deli in the last week? Cross from the north side of Millburn Avenue to the south side? The area has become a bit of a mess, especially at lunch time, because of the construction to replace the bridge just east of Main Street. The sidewalk is closed over the bridge on the south side, so people are crossing the road in the middle of the block if they want to go to the deli, Basilico or the other stores in the vicinity. And traffic can back up on Millburn Avenue as people try to make the right turn into the very small deli lot. But a police officer had been in the area by the deli and Basilico directing traffic, easing those back-ups. Plus he would stop traffic to help people, which …
