Car Crash Snarls Rt. 78 Traffic

The victim has been identified as a Hillside resident.

Traffic on Rt. 78 west was at a standstill for much of the morning Friday as emergency services cleared the road following a crash that left a woman with critical injuries.  According to a New Jersey State Police report, 18-year-old Hillside resident Jennifer Cavadas lost control of her blue Toyota Avalon while driving around a curve on Rte 24 near Rt. 78 shortly before 9 a.m. The car drifted off the road to the right, then re-entered the road and careened over all three lanes of traffic before striking and mounting the curbed median separating the highways before stopping at the median between 78 west and east. Crash Closes Rt. 78 in Springfield

The crash sent one woman to the hospital.

A pregnant woman had to be pulled from her car late Thursday morning after an accident on the rain-slicked eastbound local lanes of Rt. 78 in Springfield. The highway was closed for over an hour as emergency services from throughout the region responded to the scene.  A representative from the Springfield police said the victim was in critical condition as of Friday morning. An EMT who responded to the scene said the woman lost control of the blue Honda Civic, which spun out into the woods and collided with several trees. Two Millburn Teens Face Jail in Fatal Crash Cases

One Millburn teen is still waiting for his sentencing hearing for his role in a fatal crash while another pleaded guilty for her role in another. Richard Chesler, 18, pleaded guilty in June to vehicular homicide for his role in a January 2009 car crash that killed a South Orange resident on Parsonage Hill Road. He was scheduled for sentencing on Tuesday, but the judge adjourned the case until Sept. 21, according to Katherine Carter, Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman. The judge in the case recused himself because a potential conflict developed, she said. Carter said the prosecutor stands by the recomendation of a seven-year sentence. Chesler would have to serve 85 percent of the term before becoming eligible for parole under the …

Two Taken to Hospital After Brookside Crash

The drivers of two vehicles were injured in a car crash near the Paper Mill Playhouse.

Two people were taken to the hospital after a car crash on Brookside Drive late Thursday. Millburn firefighters had to extricate the driver of a Toyota Solara with Florida license plates, according to a Millburn Fire Department report. He and the driver of a 2010 Volkswagen CC were taken by the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad to Overlook Hospital. Firefighters had to remove the driver side front door to help the driver of the Toyota from the vehicle. They then stabilized his spine at the scene. The report states it was a two-car, head-on collision near 24 Brookside Drive, which is the bend in the road just north of the Paper Mill Playhouse. One Injured in Main Street Crash

First Aid Squad members transport the driver of one vehicle to the hospital.

One person was injured after a three-car crash on Main Street Saturday. Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad EMTs transported the driver of one vehicle to a nearby hospital, according to a Millburn Fire Department report. Firefighters were on scene and cleaned up fluid that had leaked from one vehicle with a drying agent. The accident was reported at about 9:15 a.m. and firefighters were on scene until about 10:30 when a tow company arrived.

Memorial Set Up for Crash Victim

The victim of a motorcycle crash last week was a Livingston firefighter.

There is a roadside memorial set up on White Oak Ridge Road for the victim of a motorcycle crash last weekend. Anthony J. Deltufo, 54, of Livingston, died from the injuries he suffered when his motorcycle collided with a car on the curve of the road near the Livingston border. Deltufo was a Livingston volunteer firefighter. The funeral for Deltufo was on Thursday, and a crew of Millburn firefighters were on duty in Livingston in order to allow all Livingston firefighters to attend it. The 30-year-old passenger on Deltufo's motorcycle also suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital. She was treated and released. Both were ejected from the motorcycle, police said. Livingston Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash

The crash between the motorcycle and a car was Saturday night on White Oak Ridge Road.

A Livingston man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car on Saturday night on White Oak Ridge Road. Anthony J. Deltufo, 54, of Livingston was pronounced dead at Morriston Memorial Hospital at just after 4 a.m. on Sunday. Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad EMTs administered CPR at the scene before transporting him to the hospital. Police said Deltufo and the female passenger on the motorcycle were ejected. The 30-year-old female passenger was taken the the hospital complaining of pain. She was treated and released. The driver of the vehicle, a 63-year-old female from Freehold, had no complaints of injuries. Millburn Teen Pleads Guilty in Fatal Crash Case

The Millburn teen charged in a 2009 fatal car crash pleaded guilty in Essex County Court on Tuesday. Richard Chesler, 18, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, said Katherine Carter, county prosecutor's office spokeswoman. The prosecutor will recommend a sentence of seven years in prison, and he would have to serve 85 percent of the term before becoming eligible for parole under the No Early Release law. Carter said during Tuesday's hearing, Chesler's defense attorney stated he would argue for a shorter sentence. The sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 14. Chesler was indicted in April on first-degree aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated within 1,000 feet of a school, according to the Essex …

Route 24 Three-Car Crash Involves Juice Tanker

A three-car accident on Tuesday morning involving an orange juice tanker truck could have been a messier situation. The Millburn Fire Department responded with the Summit Fire Department to an accident on Route 24 east near mile marker 9.5 just before 8:30 a.m. Two of the vehicles, including an orange juice tractor trailer, were off the road and the third was on the median, according to the Millburn Fire Department report. The orange juice truck  was in the woods. But the truck's juice tank—which carries orange juice like fuel rather than in individual cartons—was empty. News-Record: Millburn Teen To Be Tried as Adult for Parsonage Hill Crash

A Millburn teen will face adult criminal charges for the death of a South Orange man from a January car crash on Parsonage Hill Road, according to a News-Record report. A superior court judge ruled Richard M. Chesler, who was 17 at the time of the crash, was to be charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, according to the report. He faces 10-30 years in prison if convicted. The News Record reports authorities will next seek an indictment. Ari Vuotila, 39, of South Orange, was killed in the two-car crash at the intersection of Parsonage Hill Road and Long Hill Drive on Jan. 27.
