Millburn Cross Country Run in Second

In the high school most recent invitational, the cross country team crosses the line in second.

The brisk temperatures and competition did not put a chill on Millburn’s champs at the 5250-meter course in Warinanco Park, Elizabeth. Millburn took second place overall in the Boys Varsity A Race, their first Invitational on Wednesday, since the graduation the team's former captain and lauded MHS harrier, Blake Udland. Lead by the tetrad of MHS juniors, Millburn was anticipated to grapple with rivals Morristown and Westfield High Schools for a top position at the state meet. Finishing first for Millburn was Robert Stone, returning from an Achilles injury that prevented his participation in several regular season dual meets. “It’s a good start for the season, but I’m not in peak shape yet,” Stone said about his seventh place finish in 17:…

Millburn Boys Cross Country Still Undefeated

A recap from runner Matt DeShaw of the last meet.

The Millburn Boys Varsity Cross Country squad continued its undefeated season after beating the SEC American division rivals Montclair Kimberly Academy and East Side High School at Branch Brook Park in Newark. Eleven Super Essex Conference schools participated in the 74-runner field on Sept 24. The unseasonably high temperatures and high humidity were no match for Millburn’s stellar meet performance, boasting the top three race finishers: Chris Shim (1st at 17:17), Matt DeShaw (2nd at 17:23) and Steven Cohen (3rd at 17:26), all juniors at Millburn High School. Also scoring for the Millburn team were sophomore Daniel Altschuler (8th place at 18:07) and freshman Chris Stone (9th place at 18:08). Senior Ethan Kramer (10th place at 18:08) and …

Girls Cross Country Chasing Giants Next Season

The Miller girls had a great season going 15-1, but they are looking up at two great teams.

Despite having yet another great season, the Millburn girls cross country team finds itself in a similar position as it was a year ago. Millburn finished the fall season with a 15-1 dual meet record and second place performances in the conference, county and North II Group 3 section but still find themselves chasing two difficult teams. A year ago when the girls had a similar finish, it was Livingston they targeted as the team to beat. Now Livingston is out of the way, but now Mt. St. Dominic (conference and county champions) along with Mendham (section and Group 3 champions) are the teams Millburn is chasing. "It was a great season. The only downside is that we didn't win anything," said Millburn head coach Mike Artigliere. "We weren't …

Udland Shines at Group 3 Championships

The boys take 10th place, the girls place 16th and Udland placed fourth overall

Blake Udland is the lone Miller cross country runner moving on to the final stage of the season, the Meet of Champions. Udland placed fourth in the Group 3 Championships on Saturday at Holmdel Park, clocking in at 16:13.15, less than 30 seconds behind first place runner Jim Rosa. "We were very happy. Going into the day we were hoping to be in the top five," said Millburn head coach Jeff Kaye. Udland's time was a near 20-second personal record at Holdmel, and what's more encouraging about his finish is that everyone who placed better than him is graduating in June. Udland may be the frontrunner in the state come next fall. "We noticed that and you can't definitely say that next year he will win," Kaye said. "I think it was encouraging to …

Udland Leads Way in Cross Country Strong Section Finish

Both the girls and the boys teams came in second on Saturday.

After two years of playing second and third fiddle, Millburn's Blake Udland has finally had his day. Udland posted a 16:38.6, winning the first ever major championship race of his cross country career on Saturday morning at the North II Group 3 state sectional championships at Warinanco Park. "My whole freshman and sophomore year I was running in the shadow of Tyler (Udland) and Brian (Robinson)," Udland said. "Now to finally win something, it feels great." Through the first 1,600 meters Udland was in a tight group with two Mendham runners out in front of the rest of the pack. He was content to play possum for the first two miles, letting the other runners set the pace. "He ran good. He wanted to run well because he obviously missed a …

Girls Millers Take Second in SEC Divisional Meet

The Millburn boys cross country take third.

A young Millburn girls cross country team would have liked to win the Super Essex Conference American division meet on Tuesday, but Mount St. Dominic was just too tough. The Lady Millers came in second with a score of 58, far behind the Lady Lions with 19. During the regular season the only team that defeated Millburn in a dual meet was Mount St. Dominic with a 15-1 record. On the boys side Millburn was missing their top runner in Blake Udland and finished in third with 61, just behind Seton Hall Prep at 61 and the winner Livingston with 45 in the SEC American. The top runner coming in for the Lady Millers was junior Beatrice Konrad at 21:09.9, who was fifth in the American division and the first runner outside of a Mount St. Dominic …

Last Udland Standing: Blake Prepares to Run Alone

Blake Udland enters the fall as Millburn's one elite runner.

For the first time in his high school racing career Blake Udland will be alone at the top. With the graduations of his older brother Tyler and teammate Brian Robinson, two of the best distance runners in the school's history, the youngest Udland has gone from number three to number one on the depth chart. At this point in his running career Udland has excelled mostly at the one-mile event, where he holds both the freshmen and sophomore records. While he's clearly an above average talent in cross country, he has not yet made a big splash in a championship event. "It's certainly a possibility for him to get records. Certainly the mile and the 1,600 record.," said Millburn cross country head coach Jeff Kaye. "The two-mile, we'll see how …

Millburn Boys Cross Country Has a New Look

With four of the top five runners gone, the 2010 team will be much different than 2009.

The only certainty about this year's boys cross country squad is that they will be very different from the 2009 version. The losses of Tyler Udland and Brian Robinson to graduation are the obvious ones. Willy Friedlander also graduated, and John Murphy will miss his senior season while recovering from surgery. That means that four of Millburn's top five runners from last season are no longer on the team, leaving six spots to fill and a lot of uncertainty heading into the fall. "We're a different team. We're not built like we used to be in the past," said head coach Jeff Kaye. "In the past, we've always had a number of frontrunners. Conference and county, they always ended up being easy wins for us. This year I think we have a chance to win…
