As the annual deer management program reaches the midway point, we'd like to know your thoughts.
Essex County is midway through its annual winter deer hunt that started on Jan. 17 in the hopes of curbing the whitetail deer population. Since 2008, volunteer sharpshooters have stationed themselves at platforms in county reservations to cull deer. Last year, the county reported that the efforts had curbed 1,089 deer since the program's beginning. In 2010, the deer hunt spread to three reservations - South Mountain, Eagle Rock and Hilltop. In addition, the county has installed traffic deflectors and started replanting the undergrowth in some of the reservations as additional methods to curb deer. This year's hunt will finish on Feb. 23. Even after four years, some people object to the hunt and say it's inhumane and ineffective. We'd like …

Deer hunt begins on Monday and goes through Jan. 31.
The Township of Millburn will begin this year’s deer hunt to thin the herd on the Par 3 Golf Course and the East Orange Water Company property and adjacent property on Monday. The hunt, conducted by United Bowhunters of New Jersey using firearms instead of bows and arrows, will go through Jan. 31, 2012. “Every precaution has been taken to ensure the safety of the public. Hunting will occur with authorized licensed hunters using shotguns from elevated tree stands,” said Lt. Peter Eakley of the Millburn Police Department, which will patrol the areas during the hunt. “Shooting at this angle ensures that the hunter is discharging their firearm directly at the ground, hence dramatically reducing the chances of any additional hazards to the …

The county executive says deer are still a big problem in the reservations.
Though trained marksmen killed 339 deer this year at three county parks and reservations, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. said the overpopulation of white-tailed deer remains a problem. "The scientific numbers from our program do not lie," he said. "We continue to have a serious problem with the number of deer in our reservations. The overpopulation of deer is proven to be a detriment to the health of our forests and natural habitats, and dangerous driving conditions are created by deer wandering onto our roads." The county executive explained the results of this winter's deer hunt, which took place over the last two months at South Mountain Reservation, Eagle Rock Reservation and the Hilltop Reservation. DiVincenzo said 339 …

There could be another census of the deer next month.
Hunters killed 33 deer in Millburn's annual and there could be a census of the township's deer in March. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said the hunters from United Bowhunters took five deer on the par 3 golf course at Gero Park and the remainder were from the East Orange Water Company. There was no hunt at the Oakey Tract this year. A year ago the hunters took 18 deer from the water company property and The hunters were given deer meat in lieu of a payment, and the remaining 20 deer were donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which accounted for nearly 3,000 meals. The hunt was completed on Feb. 13. The golf course is a difficult place for a deer hunt because it is more open, he said. The hunters set up tree stands and shoot …

The hunt has been happening since Jan. 1 at the golf course and the East Orange Water Company property.
Deer culling at South Mountain Reservation and in Livingston have helped Millburn with its efforts, according to the township administrator. Millburn officials cut back and shifted its deer hunt for 2011, which has been happening since Jan. 1 at the East Orange Water Company property off of John F. Kennedy Parkway and on the township golf course at Gero Park. The hunt will not take place at the Oakey Tract. The golf course is closed to the public Monday through Saturday sunrise to sunset through Feb. 12 because of the hunt. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said as of last Sunday the United Bowhunters of New Jersey have killed eight deer—four on each property. They hunted on four days at the golf course and twice at the water company …

Though it attracts protesters every year, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. said he is committed to continuing a deer hunt at three of Essex County's reservations. His reasons are twofold, he said—he wants to protect the county's remaining forests and reduce the number of car crashes involving deer. "Reducing the number of deer in our reservations is a very controversial and emotional issue, but it is a necessary step if we are going to preserve the forest habitat and maintain our reservations as viable resources for recreation and open space," DiVincenzo said. "Over the last three years, we have … started a program to accelerate the re-growth of our forests and expanded a pilot program to reduce traffic accidents involving deer…

County officials will unveil the plans for the annual culling on Monday.
Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. will outline plans for culling deer at three county reservations on Monday at 1 p.m. at the county’s satellite office at the South Mountain Recreation Complex. This year’s hunt will take place for six weeks, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting on Jan. 18 and ending on Feb. 24. The hunt has been conducted at the South Mountain Reservation since 2008. Last year, the county expanded it to the Eagle Rock Reservation and the Hilltop Reservation. South Mountain is 2,047 acres and is located in Maplewood, Millburn and West Orange. The Hilltop Reservation, with 284 acres, is in Verona, Cedar Grove, Caldwell and North Caldwell, while Eagle Rock Reservation, which has 408 acres, is located in West …

Neighbors of the golf course raised safety concerns after being notified about the hunt.
The township's annual deer culling was supposed to start on Thursday, but officials put it off because of some concerns that were raised. The township's hunt has expanded to the par three golf course for the first time this winter, and the residents in the area were notified about it earlier this week, said Township Administrator Tim Gordon. That's when he received several e-mails from neighbors with safety concerns for their children. So the hunt has been delayed until the Millburn Township Committee can review the concerns and approve moving forward, he said, and he's still waiting to hear back from a few members. He also explained to the neighbors via e-mail how the hunt works. Hunters from United Bow Hunters are on tree stands. Using a…

The annual deer hunt is scheduled for January. The Township Committee will discuss the township deer hunt plans Tuesday.
Essex County officials are targeting to remove 60 deer from South Mountain Reservation during their annual hunt scheduled for January. County officials called a press conference Monday afternoon to unveil their plans for the annual deer hunt, which includes South Mountain Reservation. It comes on the eve of the Township Committee meeting when the township's deer culling activities will be discussed. "There is no question we have the best program in the entire state," said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. during Monday's press conference. He cited the health and safety of the county's residents as the reason for the hunt but also stated it was important to the reforestation efforts taking place in the reservation. County …

Township officials also haven't discussed how to approach the annual deer hunt this winter.
Township officials are still planning how to approach this year's deer culling, but they say an ordinance already is in place that does not allow hunting on residential property without special permission. A new state law changes the buffer between property lines to 150 feet for hunting, including bows and arrows. Residents requested township officials to pass an ordinance to protect them from hunting on their neighbor's properties during the last township committee meeting. Sandra Miller, of Delbarton Drive, again raised her concerns during Tuesday's Township Committee meeting and if an ordinance would be put into place. Mayor Thomas McDermott said there is an ordinance already in place to protect residents. The ordinance does not allow …
