State Legislative District 27 Election More Competitive Due To Redistricting

Taxes and the economy were important issues discussed Tuesday during the Livingston League of Women Voters' Candidates Night

The political divide was evident on Tuesday night at the Livingston League of Women Voters’ candidates night. The applause from the audience of more than 100 people crowd inside the high school choir room was split and slightly louder for the Republicans.  But incumbents state Sen. Richard Codey,(D-Essex), Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, (D-Essex), and Assemblyman John McKeon, (D-Essex) verbally sparred with challengers William Eames, Nicole Hagner and Lee Holtzman, all Republicans. Eames also is a Tea Party candidate.  The election race in the traditionally Democratic 27th legislative district will be more competitive next month with an influx of Republican voters.  A new redistricting plan approved earlier this year moved the legislative …

Politics is also about MONEY, and Codey has spent years amassing a war-chest because he knew the Dems would screw him on redistricting. As for Name Recognition, it's kind of hard not to be somewhat well known after almost four decades in office, including a one year stint as Acting Governor when your handpicked candidate had to head for the hills because of some bad decisions he made about …   more ›

Garden State Roots

New Book from NJ's Own Tom Perrotta

The writer shows our suburban reality, based in his real (local) life -- True Jersey Fiction.

Tom Perrotta's newest book, The Leftovers, has garnered five-star reviews recently. Click here to read what The New York Times has to say. New Jersey Monthly weighs in here.  New Jersey gets a bad rap sometimes. Our down-the-shore antics become televised escapades, and the state's countless homemakers are represented by a handful in the headlines. Fortunately, we have fiction, such as the novels of Tom Perrotta, to reflect another reality. Perrotta is the author of seven books, including Election and Little Children, which became award-winning movies, and The Leftovers, published in August 2011. Bad Haircut, a collection of stories, is his first work; The Abstinence Teacher is most recent. When Little Children was published and then …

Letter: McDermott, Bourke Thank Supporters

Tom McDermott and Ted Bourke won seats on the Township Committee in the election last week.

Dear Editor, We would like to thank all of our supporters for the electing us to the township committee. We appreciate your vote of confidence and look forward to the challenges ahead, and to working to achieve the goals and objectives that will benefit Millburn residents. Also, we would like to thank Peter Humphrey and Seth Levine for their hard work during the campaign and their commitment to serve our community. There are many others to thank, but specifically we would like to express our deepest gratitude to: our families for putting up with our extended absences while campaigning; the army of high school girls that went door to door in Glenwood; the hundreds of families that displayed our lawn signs; and a special thanks to Linda …

Busy Day Reported at Millburn-Short Hills Polls

There have been minor problems at the polls, but nothing major has been reported.

Mattering when  you went to the polls during the day on Tuesday, you could find a steady stream of people or you could find a quiet polling place. But overall, it's been a strong turnout for Tuesday's election, according to election officials. Polls are open until 8 p.m. and voters can cast their ballot in four races, including the Township Committee, County Executive and Clerk, and local Congressional races. "It's been a big turnout so far," said Township Clerk Joanne Monarque. "It's not surprising because it's been busy everywhere."
