Farmers Market to Change Location, Days

Market will be held on Fridays this year starting June 8 in the lot by Town Hall.

Change is coming to this year’s Farmer’s Market. Because of the construction on the parking deck that will take place in Municipal Lot #2, where the Farmer’s Market has traditionally been held, this year’s market will be in the lot next to Town Hall, according to Downtown Millburn officials. The Market will also take place on Fridays this year and begins on June 8. All the same farm vendors will be back, they say. Some of those are Alstede, E.R. & Son Organic, Ort and Vacchiano Farms as well as  Dr. Pickle, Gina’s Bakery and Hoboken Farms. For more information on the Farmers Market, visit Downtown Millburn’s website at www.downtownmillburn.org, call 973-379-2341.

If you prefer weekends, please email your suggestion to the Millburn Town Hall and Chamber of Commerce (which also may have a say in the decision). I too prefer a weekend day so am going to email my suggestion now. Hope others will do the same...so our government knows what the people prefer.   more ›

Farmers Market Closes for the Season

The Millburn market will be back in June.

Tuesday was the final day of 2010 locals could get their farm-fresh vegetables and fruits. It was the last day of the Millburn Farmers Market season. But there are chances to still buy them in neighboring communities. Summit's market, which is on Sundays, goes through November.

Taste (and Drink) of Fall at the Farmers Market

Tuesday was the fall festival at the market.

You could get a taste of food from some of downtown's local shops and get a taste of wine too at Tuesday's farmers market. At the fall festival Osteria Mediterrania had ravioli and a salad while Epiciere Fine had desserts and cheeses to sample. Maplewood resident Hank Zona, of Swirl Wine Events, brought a collection of wines to try. Included as a boxed and bottled wine from the same company he wanted people to try to distinguish, which no one could. He also had wine from Vacchiano Farms, which is sold at the market, for people to try. The festival also had a pie baking contest. Filip Wilfrid, of Berkeley Heights, took first in the apple category. Jeanne Weill and Wendy Freidrich, both of Millburn-Short Hills, took second and third. In the …

DMDA Collecting for Red Cross Food Pantry

The collection box is at the farmers market each week.

The Downtown Millburn Development Alliance is collecting food at the farmers market to be donated to the food pantry at the Millburn-Short Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross chapter reported in late September it needed food for the pantry, which had several nearly bare shelves. The pantry currently serves about 15 local families that have been mostly referred by agencies in the area like the township and SAGE. Among the items needed are pasta, cereal, sauce and items with protein like tuna fish and peanut butter. The box for donations is at the DMDA table at the farmers market. The market is held each Tuesday at 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lot 1, which is at the corner of Essex and Main streets. Food donations also can be …

Survey Asks What's the Best Day for the Farmers Market

Downtown Millburn wants to know when people want the township's market to be held, including Sundays.

Do you have an opinion on the farmers market? Think it should be at a different time? Offer different vendors? Now you have a chance to offer your opinion on the Millburn Farmers Market in a survey from Downtown Millburn. The survey is available on the Downtown Millburn website (and at right) in pdf format. The questions range from what day of the week people want the farmers market to be held to if people would attend it if it was held on Sundays and what types of vendors people want at the market. The Millburn Farmers Market currently is held on Tuesdays at 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in June through October. Both John Buchholz, Downtown Millburn president, and Helen Kyle, Downtown Millburn assistant director and market manager, said the survey is …

Farm Egg Demand Always High for Vacchianos

The Vacchianos sell eggs at the Millburn Farmers Market each week, and they can't say if the recall has affected demand.

It's hard for Anthony Vacchiano to say if the egg recall has caused any rise in demand for eggs from his farm. "We always sell out," said the Vacchiano Farms owner at the Millburn Farmers Market on Tuesday. Vacchiano Farms is the only farm vendor at the market selling meat and eggs. There was a pile of cartons of brown eggs on the table at the stand on Tuesday with a sign saying they were $3.50 per dozen. "Our demand always stays the same," Vacchiano said. "It matters how the chickens are performing on how many eggs we have... We can only sell what we have." The Vacchianos have 1,000 chickens that lay about 800 eggs per day. Vacchiano said it is the right number of chickens because they get along with each other. If he had more, the …
