Two members of family sent to hospital following accident.
A car crashed into a Morris Avenue home, sending two people to the hospital, including a small child. Emergency responders said that some time around 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, an elderly driver of a town car lost control of his vehicle. Reportedly swaying the vehicle as he drove the one-way street, the driver—described by neighbors and emergency responders as in his 70s or older—lost control of his vehicle and spun into a single family home set set back from the road. His car was lodged into the home up to the windshield and required firefighters and emergency responders from Springfield and neighboring towns to perform emergency carpentry to extract the vehicle. Neighbors said the man was not injured in the accident. The car slammed …

The Fire Department offers safety tips for preventing fires this summer while grilling.
Dirty grills and loose or faulty propane connections are the most common cause of summer fires in Millburn and Short Hills, according the fire department. “Some are just grease fires,” said Battalion Chief Ed Wade. “People cook on it and the grease [from the dirty grill] gets hot and ignites. Some can be propane fires caused by wear and tear or mechanical failure.” Wade said that people should clean their grills after every use and inspect them or have a professional inspect them at the beginning of each season. Making sure the connections to the propane tank are tight and that there are no leaks is also important. He also said that grills should never be operated on a deck or too near a house. “[Grills] should be 15 – 25 feet away from …

Firefighters put out car fire; police investigate theft of a box of soup and a purse on Friday.
Millburn firefighters put out a car fire on Oakdale Road on Friday, after a car with a faulty headlight started smoking then burst into flames in the driveway. The owners had taken their 2004 BMW convertible to an auto repair shop to fix the headlight, but were told that it was a complicated repair job, it could not be done on Friday and they should bring it back. Police reported that the owner of the vehicle, Derek Hicks, drove the car home but detected an odor but could not determine what it was. He parked the car in the driveway of his home and went inside. Moments later, his wife, Marcia, noticed smoke coming from the engine and then noticed flames emerging from the engine area as well, soon engulfing the engine in fire. The Hicks …

Mulch in Essex County's compost site caught fire in the dry heat Monday night.
With temperatures over 90 degrees Monday, New Jersey was on high alert for fires and about 8 p.m. Millburn Fire Department got a call that a fire had erupted in the Essex County mulch yard on the South Mountain reservation. Firefighters got to the South Mountain Compost Site off South Orange Avenue quickly and already part of the football field sized pile of mulch was engulfed in flames, Battalion Chief Robert Echavarria said. “There were flames 50 feet high and 100 feet wide,” Echavarria said, adding that firefighters were quickly able to get the flames under control, but had to keep digging further for a while. “The mulch is so dry and the piles are so huge, there was a lot of it hidden underneath.” The company that the county contracts …

Rip Esselstyn pitches firefighters on plant-based diets.
Rip Esselstyn had a hard sell, and he knew it. He was standing in front of about 36 Jersey firefighters at Springfield Fire Headquarters, trying to convince them to trade steaks and pizzas for vegetables and whole grains. These weren’t sprouts and tofu guys. They were the kind of guys who splinter run into burning buildings as part of their job. Esselstyn knew his audience. A former firefighter, he tailored his argument for his “Engine 2 Diet,” a healthy eating program that eschews meat, cheese, oils and processed foods, for his fire fighting brethren. “The most bad ass foods on the planet are plants,” Esselstyn said. Several times in the short presentation, he returned to his mantra “real men eat plants” and that the traditional …

Firefighters investigate blaze in Millburn Avenue residence.
A woman was sent to Overlook hospital for minor injuries after escaping her burning house on Millburn Avenue Thursday night. The blaze was in the first floor living room and extended to the kitchen and the dining room, and there was smoke damage throughout the house, said Millburn Fire Chief Mike Roberts. When firefighters arrived they could see heavy smoke in the second and third stories of the house, Roberts said. The house was filled with furniture, papers and boxes of things that fire fighters had to move in order to fight the fire and keep it contained, Roberts said. The fire department was called by a neighbor to the house at 420 Millburn Avenue at 7:49 p.m. and were on the scene within two minutes. They were assisted by Summit, …

Just-released study explores the pros and cons of expanding the range of fire services shared by the two communities.
Could the fire departments of Millburn and Summit be merged into one? On Monday, officials from the neighboring communities heard the findings of a study conducted by Emergency Services Consulting International during a meeting at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. No decision was made – in fact, none is expected for quite some time – but it appears such a move could be on the horizon. ECSI's 209-page Shared Fire Services Feasibility Study, highlights of which were presented by consultant Phil Kouwe, shows that both municipalities have many things in common, among them, population, department response time, and staffing levels. These similarities make a number of collaborative strategies – including a merging of their fire …

Snow removal continues throughout town after the storm that brought about 14 inches of snow.
Snow removal continues on Friday in Millburn-Short Hills, and the Millburn Fire Department needs residents' help. The National Weather Service reports slighly more than 14 inches of snow fell in West Orange during the storm that pushed through the region on Wednesday and Thursday. Schools were back in session on Friday and municipal offices were open. The library also was back open. Millburn firefighters are working to clear the 643 fire hydrants throughout town, but a message from the department states the work is beginning "to take its toll on fire department personnel." "Our reason for keeping the hydrants clear is always to ensure safety of the public we serve however under the current conditions we need to ask for the assistance of …

The Millburn Fire Department helped sponsor the event that also benefited the New Jersey State Firefighters’ Mutual Benevolent Association.
The competition was hot. The chefs were red-faced and working hard as they dished up everything from jambalaya to short ribs. Fortunately, these chefs are used to working under hot conditions—they’re also firefighters. The Millburn Fire Department sponsored the Corked and Uncorked Food and Wine Festival, the first event of its kind, Monday night to benefit the St. Barnabas Burn Foundation and the New Jersey State Firefighters’ Mutual Benevolent Association. Held at the Pines Manor in Edison, the evening featured food, wine and spirits donated by area restaurants and distributors. The highlight of the evening, however, was the Ultimate Fire Department Cookoff in which firefighters from across the state pitted their best dishes against each …
