Glenwood School and Newark Boys Chorus School Perform Together.
After a year of planning, a very special concert became a reality yesterday at the Glenwood School as the Glenwood Chorus and the Apprentice Chorus from the Newark Boys Chorus School performed together yesterday. The concert, though, was much more than special for all of the participants, the administrators and teachers who planned it. It all started last year when the Apprentice Chorus came to perform at Glenwood and Glenwood's chorus teacher, Grace Johnson, invited Michael Sanflippo – NBCS’ chorus director, to ask his chorus if they would like to do warm up exercises with the Glenwood students. The groups both were surprised that they all knew the same vocal warm ups. They all enjoyed the spontaneous experience and the resulting sounds…

They performed in the annual concert for their families, including an appearance by the Grinch.
You won't find a Grinch among the Glenwood Elementary School students, although you'll find one among the teachers. The school held its holiday concert for parents and family on Friday, which included an appearance by the Grinch (a teacher dressed up as him anyway) among the many songs presented by the students.

The school held its annual walk-a-thon on Wednesday.
As the group of students rounded the field at Glenwood Elementary School, they ran past the group of soldiers standing along the side to high five them. Students at the school on Wednesday took part in the annual walk-a-thon to raise money for a charity. This year's charity is the G.I. Go Fund, which helps veterans returning from combat. Several soldiers from the Marines and Navy were on hand for the event. Each grade had a specific time to take to the field to run and walk. Glenwood Principal David Jasin said the goal was to raise at least $10,000 for the fund. The annual event has raised over $110,000 for a variety of charities in more than a decade. Those wishing to donate to the students' efforts can do so by sending a check to The G.I…

M-MAC is sponsoring the show that is going to all of the elementary schools this month.
The story of the puppet show at Glenwood Elementary School Wednesday afternoon was about a new playground game called Hide and Slide, but it taught many other issues. The students learned about bullying, sharing and the affects of drugs during the presentation by Sadecky's Puppets. The puppet show, titled "Hide and Slide," will be traveling to each of the elementary schools in October as part of Red Ribbon Week and is sponsored by M-MAC. Red Ribbon Week is to raise drug and alcohol awareness. The story is about how Marty invents the new playground game Hide and Slide with his friend Chase. The game becomes popular, but a bully chases the kids away from the playground because he wants to play the game with his friend. Meanwhile, Marty …

A history of how the elementary school came into existence, but it wasn't always called Glenwood.
A few years ago the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society was contacted by several Glenwood students who needed answers to an assignment with a historical bent. Among the questions was one about how Glenwood Elementary School got its name. What none of us knew at that time was that before Glenwood got that name it was referred to as the West Millburn Elementary School. Township residents John and Barbara Murray gave the historical society a copy of a 1937 Property Aquisition Bulletin for Millburn Township Public Schools. The publication addressed needs of the growing student population and focused on the need for an elementary school in the "West Millburn site" off of Chatham Road to serve the students in the Glenwood-Oak Hills-Brantwood…

Millburn-Short Hills residents have the chance to raise some money for their schools with a click of the mouse. Kohl's Cares for Kids, sponsored by the department store with the same name, is giving away $10 million to schools across the country. Twenty schools will receive $500,000 each through the campaign on Facebook. And to get the money, a school needs the most votes and the best ideas. Millburn-Short Hills public schools already are on the list with a handful of votes, but some schools are still waiting for votes. Millburn High School has eight votes, Millburn Middle School has two, Deerfield Elementary School has none, Hartshorn Elementary School has one, Glenwood Elementary School has none, South Mountain Elementary School has one …

The elementary schools hold stepping forward ceremonies for the fifth graders.
Monday was graduation for Millburn High School seniors, Tuesday was moving up day for Millburn Middle School eighth graders and Wednesday was the day for fifth graders to take their steps forward. Each of the elementary schools held moving up ceremonies for their fifth graders. The students will move on to Millburn Middle School for sixth grade, but they've already met some of their future classmates at field day and TGIF night. Readers Larry Claman, Jude Huang and Lisa Helmacy submitted these photos from Hartshorn, South Mountain and Deerfield. Want to submit photos from your elementary school's ceremony? Send them to jen@patch.com or login and post them here.

The rains came early, but it cleared in time for the festival fun for the final time this spring.
At about 2:30 p.m., the dark clouds gathered over Millburn-Short Hills and it started raining very soon after. The Glenwood strawberry festival had already been pushed back one day because of weather concerns. But by 3:15, the clouds started to push out and the rain ended to make way for the final strawberry festival of the season. There were plenty of games, rides and food—the usual fun that can be found at the strawberry festivals.
