The Millburn based organization, the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, received a $15,000 grant from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey this past week to support its initiative to keep fifth-grades off drugs.  "We are extremely grateful for the Horizon Foundation's continuous support," the executive director of The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, Angelo Valente, said. The last time I asked about that stretch, I was told they were researching it. It's a difficult road project because of the complexities of the road (like the gutters on the sides). The other end of Hobart was done last year.   more ›

Grant to Provide Millburn Police with New Bulletproof Vests

The department's $4,757.74 grant will cover 12 new vests.

A state grant for body armor for police will allow the Millburn Police Department to purchase new bulletproof vests for 12 officers. The Millburn Police Department is receiving $4,757.74 as part of the $3.5 million distributed to state, county and local law enforcement agencies from the state's Body Armor Replacement Fund. The fund was established by legislation in 1998 and is funded through a $1 surcharge on traffic tickets and forfeitures of bail. Millburn Police Capt. Greg Weber said grant will allow them to replace bulletproof vests for 12 officers. The life of a vest is five years, he said, and they need to be replaced at that time. The number of officers in need of a new vest each year varies each year, he said, and police anticipate…

The work will be done at two polling places.

Millburn is among the 14 Essex County communities that received grants from the county. Grant Would Upgrade FD Kitchen

The kitchen can be used by workers during emergencies like a hurricane.

There are things township officials would like to have, but they know they're not something they can justify the cost to do. One of those things is upgrades to the Millburn Fire Department's kitchen at both stations. "It's a 'nice to have,' but we can't justify the cost," said Township Administrator Tim Gordon. Instead, Millburn officials are seeking a Firefighters Assistance Grant through the federal economic stimulus program in order to upgrade the facilities at both stations. The grant application lists the cost at $220,400 with the township willing to pay 10 percent of the cost. The Township Committee approved the application in July. Gordon said the grant's original intention was to build new firehouses, but when he reviewed the …

Paper Mill Grappling with State Funding Cut

State officials use bookkeeping move to restore arts funding to minimum levels

A bookkeeping move is allowing the state of New Jersey to meet its required minimum arts funding, but the result still means cuts in funding to arts organizations, including the Paper Mill Playhouse. There has been debate since the spring about the arts funding, which comes from the state's hotel occupancy tax, and last week state officials restored the funding through a bookkeeping move, according to a Star-Ledger report. The state law requires a minimum of $16 million from the hotel occupancy tax to be spent on the arts. State officials included funding that is not traditionally included to push it from the original expenditure of $14.4 million to above the minimum requirement, according to the report. The Paper Mill Playhouse, New …

Town, Project Opportunity Receive Grants

Essex County announces Community Development Block Grants

The township is receiving $71,780 and Opportunity Project will get $43,550 in county grants under the Community Development Block Grants program. The township's grant will go towards American Disabilities Act projects at Deerfield Elementary and the Millburn Public Library. Opportunity Project's grant money would go towards pre-vocational training and work adjustment. Mayor Sandra Haimoff said the project would need to be completed whether the town received the grant or not, so the grant helps off-set town expenses. "It's something that we need to do, and the grant is helping us," she said. Martha Annoni, assistant township engineer, said the township applied for about $140,000 in community development grant money a year ago to complete …
