Second Grade Class Sings to School Board About Respect

A second-grade class from Hartshorn Elementary School presented their retelling of the story 'Stone Soup' as an international project with a Canadian school.

The Millburn Board of Education was given a look into a unique project Monday night that a second-grade has been working on at Hartshorn Elementary School — a musical retelling of 'Stone Soup' as an international project.  "What started with this little video conference with this school in Canada turned into this really unique project," Eric Demel, the elementary school's computer science teacher and video conferencing corodinator, said. Using its studies on folklore and fairy tales the class retold the story "Stone Soup" in song, the second-grade teacher Amy Blake explained. The project was an international collaboration with a school in Manitoba, Canada. The Canadian school put out a calling for a project that would retell a story …

Three Millburn Elementary Schools Ranked Above 95th Percentile Statewide

Glenwood, Deerfield and Hartshorn ranked high statewide with South Mountain and Wyoming in 80th percentile in academic achievement, according to the 2013 NJ School Performance Reports.

Millburn School District's elementary schools were recently ranked in the top tier in academic achievement throughout New Jersey according to the recent school performance reports issued by the Christie administration. Glenwood and Deerfield elementary led the group, ranking in the 96th percentile in the state with Hartshorn right behind in the 95th percentile. South Mountain and Wyoming both tested in the 81st and 81th percentile. Wyoming and Hartshorn schools were the only two that didn't meet 100 percent of their targets — Wyoming made 83 percent while Hartshorn made 75.  Wyoming also only ranked in the 39th percentile for College and Career Readiness, meeting none of the state's targets and 58th in Student growth, meeting 100 percent …

Millburn Students Dress for Success

Hartshorn students dressed up like their moms and dads in business attire to kick off a week long clothing drive 'Drive for Dress for Success and Career Gear.'

Students at the Millburn's Hartshorn Elementary School dressed up like their moms and dads in business attire on March 12 to kick off a Drive for Dress for Success and Career Gear.   The collection was sponsored by the Community Outreach Committee & Hartshorn School last week from March 12 to 15. They are collected clean, gently used suits, blouses, shoes, professional overcoats, unused cosmetics and accessories for both men and women. Office supplies such as flash drives and copy paper were also accepted.

Jake's Ride Raises $300,000

Over 1,000 people participated in the 5th Annual Jake’s Ride for Dystonia Research at Hartshorn Elementary.

Over 1,000 people showed up to pedal for medical research this past Sunday at Hartshorn Elementary, raising over $300,000. Jake’s Ride is a community fundraiser with several bike-riding courses including a one-mile, five-mile, 10-mile and 20-mile route traveling through Millburn and Short Hills, as well as a one-mile walking course. The event was filled with live entertainment, raffle prizes, free food for all attendees, arts and crafts table, free picture photo booth, tents promoting local businesses  and sponsors. As one of the Foundation’s most successful grassroots fundraising events, it has raised over $1 million in four years, funding 13 research grants for dystonia and a movement disorder fellow.   Jake’s Ride was supported by a …

Road Runners Raise Money for The Valerie Fund

Hartshorn running club builds strong muscles and self esteem and raise money for other kids in the process.

Hartshorn School 3rd and 1st grade teachers Terri Cullen and Rebecca Dubnow coached the Hartshorn Road Runners after-school running club for their students this spring. In addition to fun and exercise, the teachers’ aim was to build self-esteem and confidence among girls through running and team building activities. Now the Road Runners are running in the Valerie Fund 5K on Saturday, June 9. Hartshorn Teacher to Become Principal in Glen Rock

Krista Lee LaCroix, a veteran of Millburn's school system, will leave to become Principal at Central School on July 1.

The Central School community in Glen Rock is hoping the board's new principal hire on Monday night effectively closes the revolving door of top administrators at the S. Maple Ave. elementary school. The school board unanimously approved the hire of Krista Lee LaCroix, currently a supervisor of instruction at Hartshorn Elementary School in Millburn. Hartshorn principal Ron Castaldo, who is retiring this year from Hartshorn, said he is proud of LaCroix. "She has the knowledge, skills and experience to be an outstanding principal," he said. "Everything she has accomplished at Hartshorn has prepared her to be a great principal. She has the full support and love from everyone at Hartshorn."
