It isn't always pretty. In fact, it rarely is. When the two top ice hockey squads in the New York-New Jersey metro area lace them up, it's always a spectacle. But it's never more so than when the matchups come in the playoffs. Of course, we're talking about the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers (sorry Islanders fans, but the '80s are behind us). The two NHL teams begin their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series Monday night (8; NBC Sports Network) for the right to head to the Stanley Cup Finals. Steve Chernoski's new film can be seen online starting Wednesday.
Steve Chernoski is a hockey fan, and he likes talking to other people about hockey—like the fans of the Hershey Bears. "(The team) has been there forever," he said. "It's how you build a tradition in a non-hockey market." Hershey was one of his stops on a trip to examine hockey across the northeast last winter, which is now part of a new documentary about the sport. Hershey is in the middle of Pennsylvania in an area people wouldn't think hockey could thrive, he said, yet it does. He was most moved by seeing an older woman, a grandmother, keeping score during a game there and how she was helping keep the tradition alive. More than in most sports, basketball is a game where one player can have an enormous and measurable impact on each game. It is why basketball at the professional level is a game of highly marketed stars. Simply put, when a team has players who can take control of the game and create their own offense, it makes that team very hard to put away in close games, especially in the playoffs or tournaments.
