Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Supporting the Chai Center

Former Millburn resident urges Township to work with the Center to avoid possible appeals and federal legal claims.

Millburn Township will always be home to my family.  We moved to Florida in 1999 from Short Hills, but have kept in touch with many close friends and family in Millburn and Short Hills these past 13 years.  In 1994, I ran for Millburn Township Committee – as a Democrat.  (Running for Township Committee in 1994 as a Democrat truly reflects the love I had for the Township.)  I also had the pleasure of practicing law for several years at a firm in Short Hills. While living in first Millburn and then Short Hills, my family never missed a Forth of July celebration or Halloween parade. It is with profound sadness that I learned this morning (February 14th) that the Millburn Zoning Board denied the Chai Center’s application for a variance very …

Dear Cham, Wow. I think the nasty tone of your letter, and the arrogance implied - that just because you're Orthodox Jews (God's chosen?) you can do whatever you want - pretty much sums up why I, as a fellow Jew, can't distance myself far enough from you and your ilk. Although now that I think about it, many Orthodox don't view non-Orthodox as even Jewish so I'm sure if your twisted worldview, …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: So Much for Democracy

Writer expresses views about this week's school board meeting.

Over the clear and eloquently articulated objections of an ardent group of concerned residents, the Millburn Board of Education disenfranchised the community in a defiant vote to not only extend their own terms by nearly nine  months, but to unilaterally rescind the rights of Millburn-Short Hills residents to vote on the annual school budget. The vast majority of those that spoke asked the BOE to allow the community to vote on this measure by adding a referendum to November’s election ballot.  After all, the strongest argument for moving the vote to November is to increase voter participation in school board elections. To disregard the will of the voters in making this decision unilaterally is not only the height of hypocrisy, but also …

You are ignorant and use nothing but personal attacks to divert attention away from the facts and the truth. This Board represents no democracy only selfish interests. Don't like it when they are being called out? You are one of them.   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Tsk, Tsk, Children

Writer wonders what happened to civility at Board of Ed meetings, worries about the example the grownups are setting for children.

“Make our schools better, Mom,” said my son by way of goodbye as I walked out the door last night en route to the BOE meeting. I turned around, smiled and hugged him and then drove away wondering exactly how my attending the BOE meeting would make what are arguably already great schools any better. It also begged the question as to whether attending was more important than tucking him in for the night. I got my answer: I should have stayed home. There may be endless debate online about the vote to move the school board vote to November. I am not really going to write about that because as far as I am concerned, the point is moot. Instead, I’d like to focus on a problem that is casting a much darker shadow across our community. The issue is…

Letter: Thanks for Supporting Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

The PurpleStride event raised $150,000 to help support pancreatic cancer research.

To the Editor, I would like to offer a thank you to all of our sponsors and participants for making our inaugural PurpleStride New Jersey at the Mack Cali Business Complex in Parsippany a huge success. The New Jersey Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was able to host over 770  people for a day of music, food, and most importantly, hope in finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.  Thank you to the Daily Record and MillburnPatch.com for covering the event as well as our sponsors LF USA, Osi Pharmaceuticals, Crestron, and WDHA/WMTR radio stations. With their support we were able to raise over $150,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and alert the public about the staggering circumstances that those with pancreatic cancer…

Letter: McDermott, Bourke Thank Supporters

Tom McDermott and Ted Bourke won seats on the Township Committee in the election last week.

Dear Editor, We would like to thank all of our supporters for the electing us to the township committee. We appreciate your vote of confidence and look forward to the challenges ahead, and to working to achieve the goals and objectives that will benefit Millburn residents. Also, we would like to thank Peter Humphrey and Seth Levine for their hard work during the campaign and their commitment to serve our community. There are many others to thank, but specifically we would like to express our deepest gratitude to: our families for putting up with our extended absences while campaigning; the army of high school girls that went door to door in Glenwood; the hundreds of families that displayed our lawn signs; and a special thanks to Linda …

Election 2011

Letter: Writer Supports Humphreys for Committee

Writer says he will provide more open government.

To the Editor: On Nov. 2 voters have the opportunity to participate in democracy. My vote will be for open government.  My vote will go to the candidate who consistently asks questions, the candidate who will not make decisions behind closed doors that compromise the integrity of our Town and, most importantly, the candidate who believes that representative government means reaching out to residents to discover what they support. Peter Humphreys is that Township Committee candidate. He believes in open government.  He believes that your agenda should be his agenda.  He will reach out to citizens before making decisions that change the face of Millburn Township.  He has demonstrated this already as a candidate by surveying commuters about …

Election 2011

Letter: Candidate Urges People to Vote

Seth Levine asks people to vote on Nov. 2.

To the editor: To vote or not to vote, that is the question. Whether to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous politics, abject apathy and unrestrained power or to take arms against the sea of potential tyranny and by voting, make it safe to be an American. The great experiment of American Democracy, where you can choose those who will make your laws, set our common goals, and guide our futures only works if you vote. If you abstain from voting, two terrible things happen: the person or persons you like least effectively get two votes and worse, your opinion ceases to matter. I am a Democrat running for the Millburn Township Committee, in the town where I have lived for over twenty years. I believe that there is a great deal of work to…

Letter: Voice Opinions on Naming Policy

The writers want residents to contact the board with their opinions on the proposed naming policy.

To the Editor: The Board of Education has been considering a Naming Policy for all school district property, honors and awards. A first reading was presented by Policy Committee chairman Sam Levy on July 13. Major criticism by several board members caused Mr. Levy to end the discussion and he will present an amended first reading at the Aug. 17 Board of Education meeting, The issue first arose at the April 12 Board of Education meeting when Jeff Waters proposed withdrawal of the Football Boosters' Jeremy Brown award. He withdrew the proposal after discussion and before a vote was taken. At the June 28 board meeting, the board refused to accept the PTO gift of a bench and plaque for the front of the Education Center building to honor …

Letter: Thanks for Support on Pancreatic Cancer Education

The writer give thanks for those who have helped spread the word on pancreatic cancer and the need for funding for research.

Dear Editor, I would like to offer a thank you for Sam Waters' extremely informative story "Millburn Resident Leads Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer" as well as to the Somerset Patriots for helping make our Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on July 18 a resounding success.  With their support, we were able to alert the public about the staggering circumstances that those with pancreatic cancer and their families have to endure.  Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and only 6 percent of patients survive more than five years.  There are no early detection methods and no cure for this insidious disease.  More funding needs to be allocated to finding a cure, and we took another step in the right …
