Library Becomes Paper Mill's Home Away From Home

Library offered space to theater school during building repairs and roofing project this summer.

One might not expect to find singing, dancing, tapping and booming voices in a library, but that’s exactly what's upstairs this summer at the Millburn Free Library, where a community room has been turned into a musical theater studio. When the ice and snow broke through the roof of the Paper Mill Playhouse this winter, it meant the black box theater would be out of commission while workers spend much of the summer re-constructing the space and putting a new roof. That meant that the summer conservatory and the August Intensive classes would have no place work, learn and rehearse. “It was a nightmare – we were not quite sure what we were going to do,” said Mickey McNany, the Paper Mill Playhouse’s theater school director. Paper Mill …

Library Changes Room Use Policy Because of Legal Concerns

The restrictions on religious organizations has been removed from the policy.

Millburn Public Library officials last week approved changes to its room rental agreement after concerns were raised it was unconstitutional. Bill Swinson, library director, said the Alliance Defense Fund based in Kansas sent the library a letter warning the policy was unconstitutional because it specifically mentioned there could be no religious services or religious discussion groups to meet at the library. After a review by the township's attorney, he said, the Library Board of Trustees last week approved a change to the policy that removes the language about the restrictions on religious organizations. It now is along the lines of the American Library Association's guidelines for free and equal use, Swinson said. "We just wanted a true…

Hamming It Up at the Library

Kids got to play theater games in one of the many workshops for them this summer.

It's not often kids are encouraged to shout in the library, but in the Theatre Games workshop Monday night they did just that.  The workshop was open to kids age 7-10 and were first lead through a series of stretches by recent Bennington College grad Natalie Kent before learning acting exercises such as "touch of sound" and "calling the aliens." Kent will be teaching an origami workshop for kids ages 7-10 years old on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.  Registeration is available at www.mfplib.org under calendar of events or by calling 973-921-2192.

Summer an Important Time for Young Readers

Millburn children's librarian Patt Kent offers suggestions for books and tips to find the right books for them.

You've packed the sunscreen, the beach towels and the hand-held video games for vacation. But did you pack the books? Summer marks a time when many children may not have something specifically assigned to read, and Schools Supt. James Crisfield said they run the risk of regressing in their literacy skills if they take two months off. It's especially true for children who may be struggling with reading, he said. "We believe anyone can read, but it may take someone longer to learn or it could take them longer to hit their stride," he said. "Without any practice, it can be more difficult." Middile and high school students have some required reading for the fall, but elementary school students are free to read what they want. Both Crisfield …

Art Supporters Dedicate Sculpture at Library

Julie Joy Saypoff, a local artist, teamed up with the Arts Advisory Committee to complete the outside art that could be the first of many for the committee.

A group of art enthusiasts gathered at the Millburn Public Library Friday night to dedicate a new piece of art. But it's not something that's hanging on the wall inside the library. It's a sculpture titled "Inspiration" created by Millburn artist Julie Joy Saypoff. It depicts a pile of books with a series of words in copper.  Saypoff told the crowd gathered everyone's life in the community is centered on the library and the schools. It made perfect sense to her to have the sculpture there. Library Director Bill Swinson said it shows the culture and life of the community.

New Sculpture Installed at Library

Julie Joy Saypoff, a local artist, teamed up with the Arts Advisory Committee to complete the outside art that could be the first of many for the committee.

There's a pile of books outside the Millburn Public Library, but it's not a stack someone easily can take home with them. It's a new sculpture completed by Julie Joy Saypoff, a Millburn artist, that was sponsored by the Arts Advisory Committee and several dozen local professionals and businesses, and it is to be dedicated in a ceremony soon. The sculpture, titled "Inspiration," depicts a stack of books and has a series of words. About a year ago Saypoff approached township officials wanting to install a sculpture outside the library. She said her family has been part of the library community for a long time, and she thought it was the perfect place for a sculpture. She recalled how locals had told her Millburn needed sculpture, especially …

Summer Means Time to Read

The library's summer reading program is in full swing, and kids can participate online.

The state's summer reading program for libraries may be dead, but the Millburn Public Library's program lives on. The Friends of the Millburn Public Library fund the program, which makes it possible for it to continue in Millburn-Short Hills, said Susan Pober, head of information services at the library. The library just needed to secure artwork and graphics for the program since they normally used what the state program provided. This year's program is called Make a Splash at the Millburn Public Library, and it's the second year it will be completed online. Kids sign up at the library in the children's section and complete a puzzle. They then register the number of hours they spend reading online. For every five hours, a participant is …

Interlibrary Loan Safe For Now

Funding for delivery service has been saved.

Interlibrary loan at the Millburn Public Library had been in danger due to state budget cuts, but the service has been retained for now. Because of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), which serves 70 libraries in north Jersey, Millburn-Short Hills residents would still have had access to interlibrary loan, but a cut in state funding threatened the delivery service. That would have meant there would have been no way to transport books between libraries. But Library Director Bill Swinson said money has been restored, and BCCLS officials promised to fund the delivery service through at least December. If it had not survived, library directors throughout the region would have had to recreate the service, which Swinson said he…

State Cuts Would Affect Interlibrary Loan

BCCLS won't go away, but the delivery program bringing books to the libraries is in danger.

If a resident can't find what they need in the Millburn Public Library, they can easily find it elsewhere using interlibrary loan or, more frequently, the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. But if a proposal before the state legislature were to pass, residents wouldn't be able to access those books as easily. Gov. Chris Christie has proposed to cut 74 percent of statewide library funding, including a 50 percent cut in state aid to libraries. The cuts include the elimination of interlibrary loan programs and delivery. The BCCLS system of interlibrary loans, which serves about 70 north Jersey libraries, would remain. Other cuts include the state-sponsored summer reading program and the state's online databases. But Millburn Library …
