Water Main Breaks Behind High School

Break sends water shooting into the air, damaging turf field and soaking other fields at MHS.

A water main broke behind the high school this morning, sending a geyser shooting into the air and leaving a crater in the turf field. The fire department initially started getting reports of low water pressure or no water in different areas, mostly in the Glenwood and Hartshorn areas, then they got a call from the school district saying there was a water spout behind the high school between the stadium and the school, said Battalion Chief Ed Wade. New Jersey American Water knew there was a leak and was attempted to find it at the time the pipe burst behind the high school, Wade said. Crews came in and shut the water off and redirected the line. “If It had been another 20 feet away it would have happened on dirt and there would really be …

MHS Back on Newsweek's Top High Schools

Millburn ranks 83rd in the country and is the highest ranked open enrollment school in New Jersey.

The always talked about Newsweek best public high schools in the country list is out, and Millburn ranked No. 83, the highest ranked open enrollment high in the state, coming in behind three magnet or selective high schools. It is the best ranking MHS has achieved in several years, having come in 227th nationally in 2010, 170th in 2009, and 151th in 2008. Last year, Millburn did not participate in Newsweek's survey and therefore did not make the rankings. For comparison sake, other nearby open enrollment high schools ranked accordingly: Chatham at No. 183, Summit at No. 251, Livingston at No. 253, Glen Ridge at No. 255 and Madison at No. 276. And those acclaimed NYC schools, Bronx Science and Stuyvesant, both selective schools, ranked 50th…

Yes, HP...to a large degree these rankings are based on testing results. And that's why districts go out of their way each year providing (costly) remedial test-taking support to students prior to the testing dates. Miller Tennis Team Takes Section Crown

The next hurdle on the road to the Tournament of Champions is groups competition at Mercer County Park.

The Millburn High varsity tennis team took the Group 3, North 2 section title Friday with a clean sweep of Chatham High School. All courts won easily, capping a week of wins that included a shutout of Belleville High School in the quarterfinals and a 4-1 semifinal win over Chester's West Morris Central High School. Chatham had upset Mendham in the semifinals, but in the title match, held on neutral ground at Newark Academy's courts, that team could get no traction against Millburn. Millburn's first point was notched by second doubles Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Teddy Moskovitz, who defeated Parker Dixon and Tom Karmel 6-2, 6-0. Third singles Dean Koman followed on their heels with a 6-1, 6-0 trouncing of Yousef Ismail. The match-clinching third…

MHS' Girl Up Club Raises Awareness for Global Issues

Club is part of the United Nations initiative to get American teens to lead the way to help the plight of adolescent girls around the world.

While only a junior in high school, Saachi Gupta is already a citizen of the world. She has lived in several countries and, at an early age was struck by the differences in the ways girls and women are treated in different parts of the world. A year ago, while reading about the about the Vital Voices, Women in the World Summit, she began reading more and more about empowering women worldwid, including the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristoff and his wife and colleague at the New York Times, Sheryl WuDunn. “That was so eye opening,” she said. "It is very powerful." It was that book and research that led her to attend a Girl Up event at the United Nations in New York last September and to ultimately start the UN-affiliated club at Millburn…
