Miller boys had six runners complete the race.
Millburn's Blake Udland placed seventh in the state in the annual Meet of Champions, held on Saturday morning at Holmdel Park. While for most of the runners in the state, a seventh place overall finish would be cause to rejoice, for Udland, it was a win or bust situation, especially when you consider he came in with the second fastest time in the field. Piscataway's Tim Ball was the overall winner, coming in at 15:30.52. Udland finished at 15:50.32. "It was a big disappointment. I was second last week. I thought I had one strong race left to go after Ball," Udland said after the race. "Coming up the big hill after Ball, he and a couple of other guys made a move, I just didn't have it." Udland said that his legs and body didn't quite have …

Millers looking to contend with young team.
The Millburn boys cross country team enters the fall season very young, but also very deep and certainly as a team to be reckoned with in the county, conference and section. Led by a healthy Blake Udland, the Miller boys will be contenders this season. A year ago the boys took second in the North II Group 3 Sectional Championships, third in the conference and fourth overall in the county. They have their top three runners, Udland, Rob Stone and Matt DeShaw, returning for the fall. However, the back end of the team's rotation is wide-open, with a host of different runners who could potentially fill out the final spots. "The front end of the team is returning. We've had a couple of sophomores who have seemingly really stepped it up with …

The Millers are looking to move from second to first this fall
Second place was the overwhelming theme for the Miller girls cross country team last fall. The Blue and White ladies took second in the county, conference and section last year, and while that's nothing to be ashamed of, head coach Mike Artigliere and his girls are eager to take the next step and win some championships this season. "Being second in everything last year, I think our goals are pretty straight forward this year," Artigliere said. "We definitely don't want to take any steps back and we're looking to win some things this year, if not all of them." The big question for the Millers coming into the fall is how much have they improved during the offseason? While the girls took second in all of their championship meets, the first …

The Miller girls had a great season going 15-1, but they are looking up at two great teams.
Despite having yet another great season, the Millburn girls cross country team finds itself in a similar position as it was a year ago. Millburn finished the fall season with a 15-1 dual meet record and second place performances in the conference, county and North II Group 3 section but still find themselves chasing two difficult teams. A year ago when the girls had a similar finish, it was Livingston they targeted as the team to beat. Now Livingston is out of the way, but now Mt. St. Dominic (conference and county champions) along with Mendham (section and Group 3 champions) are the teams Millburn is chasing. "It was a great season. The only downside is that we didn't win anything," said Millburn head coach Mike Artigliere. "We weren't …

The boys take 10th place, the girls place 16th and Udland placed fourth overall
Blake Udland is the lone Miller cross country runner moving on to the final stage of the season, the Meet of Champions. Udland placed fourth in the Group 3 Championships on Saturday at Holmdel Park, clocking in at 16:13.15, less than 30 seconds behind first place runner Jim Rosa. "We were very happy. Going into the day we were hoping to be in the top five," said Millburn head coach Jeff Kaye. Udland's time was a near 20-second personal record at Holdmel, and what's more encouraging about his finish is that everyone who placed better than him is graduating in June. Udland may be the frontrunner in the state come next fall. "We noticed that and you can't definitely say that next year he will win," Kaye said. "I think it was encouraging to …

Both the girls and the boys teams came in second on Saturday.
After two years of playing second and third fiddle, Millburn's Blake Udland has finally had his day. Udland posted a 16:38.6, winning the first ever major championship race of his cross country career on Saturday morning at the North II Group 3 state sectional championships at Warinanco Park. "My whole freshman and sophomore year I was running in the shadow of Tyler (Udland) and Brian (Robinson)," Udland said. "Now to finally win something, it feels great." Through the first 1,600 meters Udland was in a tight group with two Mendham runners out in front of the rest of the pack. He was content to play possum for the first two miles, letting the other runners set the pace. "He ran good. He wanted to run well because he obviously missed a …

With four of the top five runners gone, the 2010 team will be much different than 2009.
The only certainty about this year's boys cross country squad is that they will be very different from the 2009 version. The losses of Tyler Udland and Brian Robinson to graduation are the obvious ones. Willy Friedlander also graduated, and John Murphy will miss his senior season while recovering from surgery. That means that four of Millburn's top five runners from last season are no longer on the team, leaving six spots to fill and a lot of uncertainty heading into the fall. "We're a different team. We're not built like we used to be in the past," said head coach Jeff Kaye. "In the past, we've always had a number of frontrunners. Conference and county, they always ended up being easy wins for us. This year I think we have a chance to win…

The graduations of Rose and Barrese leave holes in the top two spots.
After Millburn's top two girl cross country runners graduated last year, Head Coach Mike Artigliere is looking to fill the holes left by Shayna Rose and Sarah Barrese with his current seniors and underclassmen. Rose and Barrese placed 9th and 12th in the county last season, so Artigliere is drawing from the talent on the rest of his team, which placed third in the county and second in the conference section last year. "We had a good year overall," Artigliere said. "Being top three in the county and being second in the conference—which again, I think as a team we were shooting a little bit higher. Obviously the next step is to win it. All said, it was a good season, but I think we left some things on the table." Based on last season's …

Injuries and sickness hamper the team's performance.
The best boys cross country team Millburn has ever had? That's what their players and coach Jeff Kaye say. They certainly have the stats to back that claim up. Saturday's showing at the New Jersey Group Finals at Holmdel Park was a convincing performance in itself: with a combined team time of 1:24:51 and an average course completion time of 16:58.20, the boys in blue finished third out of 20 teams in Group III. Lots of teams had to overcome adversity—the field was just plain nasty. A steady barrage of wind and rain tore what was already a very difficult course up until it was a muddy, slippery mess. Several runners from several teams slipped and fell at the finish line, causing the officials to lay down hay for traction. Millburn had …

Miller boys won their third county crown in a row and the girls finished in third place.
Three Millburn runners in the top five and five in the top nine made it an easy win for the Miller boys at the annual Essex County championship cross country meet Friday at Brookdale Park. Millburn posted 28 points to best Seton Hall Prep and the rest of the field for their third consecutive county championship. “I’m very proud to do it three years in a row, and our fourth time in five years, but I did not expect that we’d have five in the top 10 and for them to be as fast as they were,” said Millburn boys head coach Jeff Kaye. “I was very proud of them, our training has come along. I couldn’t be prouder or more pleased.” Millburn’s average time of 15:44.2 shattered their own course record of 16:01.2, making it the greatest race ever run …
