Millburn ranks 83rd in the country and is the highest ranked open enrollment school in New Jersey.
The always talked about Newsweek best public high schools in the country list is out, and Millburn ranked No. 83, the highest ranked open enrollment high in the state, coming in behind three magnet or selective high schools. It is the best ranking MHS has achieved in several years, having come in 227th nationally in 2010, 170th in 2009, and 151th in 2008. Last year, Millburn did not participate in Newsweek's survey and therefore did not make the rankings. For comparison sake, other nearby open enrollment high schools ranked accordingly: Chatham at No. 183, Summit at No. 251, Livingston at No. 253, Glen Ridge at No. 255 and Madison at No. 276. And those acclaimed NYC schools, Bronx Science and Stuyvesant, both selective schools, ranked 50th…

Under new formula, the number of seniors at Millburn H.S. receiving diplomas was 98.7 percent in 2011.
Editor’s Note: The graduation rate last year at Millburn High School was 98.7 percent, according to new state data. The New Jersey Department of Education yesterday released 2011 graduation rates for high schools that were largely lower, in some cases significantly lower, than prior years. Statewide, the rate calculated using the “four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate” formula now required by the federal government was 83 percent for last spring’s high school seniors. For the Class of 2010, the graduation rate -- largely self-reported by schools -- was 94.7 percent for New Jersey. Last year, nine of the state’s 392 schools had perfect graduation rates. That’s almost 90 percent fewer than the 82 schools that reported all seniors had …

Monday night was senior night at Millburn’s Neigel Field, as the Lady Millers recognized those team members that will be graduating in June. With a big victory over Livingston, the boys’ winning season continues to gather steam.
The Millburn High School boys’ tennis team was crowned Essex County champion on Saturday, after a decisive 4-1 victory over first-seed rival Livingston High School. The triumph was especially sweet for two reasons: The tournament trophy had remained frustratingly out of reach of the Millers for three years running, and their defeat of the Lancers ended a streak of at least six straight losses to Livingston over the past two seasons. In the semifinals earlier in the day, Millburn had shut out fourth-seeded Montclair 5-0, and Livingston had beaten third-seeded Newark Academy 3-2. The Miller lineup against Montclair included Tyler Schick, Rob Xie, and Dean Koman at first, second, and third singles, respectively, Mac Johnson and Jared Wishnow …

The MHS freshman baseball team’s offense got off to a slow start, but came through in the final innings to secure a win over Nutley in Nutley on Wednesday. Nutley was on the scoreboard first, with one run in the second inning. Evan Bograd, with his double in the 4th inning, was the first Millburn player to reach base. Max Nesser followed up with a single to center field, bringing Bograd home. The score, after 4 innings, was tied 1 – 1, but Nutley got the go-ahead run in the 5th. Nutley’s lead didn’t last long. Jose Polanco and Bograd started off the 6th inning with singles, followed by walks to Jake Hubertus and Nesser. With bases loaded, Max Birner hit into a fielder’s choice, but the tying run scored. Jack Schwartz’ hit/RBI followed, as…

A second overtime win in as many games.
The Millburn Varsity girls followed up Saturday’s overtime win with an overtime win on Monday. This contest was fought at Governor Livingston High School in Basking Ridge. The Millers were on the scoreboard first, this time on a goal by Meghan Lacy in under two minutes of play. At the end of the half, Millburn held an 8 to 5 lead. Momentum shifted in the second-half, however, with Governor Livingston adding four goals in just over ten minutes to take the lead for the first time in the game. A back and forth battle ensued, and the teams headed into overtime tied, 10 – 10. Governor Livingston had a go-ahead goal within the first minute of overtime play, but Millburn’s Lilly Orlan scored to tie the game again. Goals by Governor Livingston and…

The MHS jazz bands, pop a cappella groups, and pop chamber orchestra present contemporary repertoire at annual concert
Crowds filled the MHS cafeteria Wednesday night for the annual Pops Concert, a night where the music department's exclusive ensembles presented a more light, entertaining repertoire, abandoning the classical music for contemporary jazz and pop standards. The Lab Band, one of MHS' two jazz ensembles opened the performance. The group is led by associate band director Matthew Spatz and rehearses for three hours on Thursday nights. The Lab Band presented "Leap Frog," "Peg," and "Soulin.'" Soloists in the Lab Band included saxophones Sam Curtis, Louis Danowsky, and Justin Dower; percussionist Nick Azulay; trumpet Dan Altschuler; trombone Joe Scalzo; guitar Genevieve Nelson; and bass Keegan Caulfield. The MHS Chamber Orchestra wore a different …

Yes, HP...to a large degree these rankings are based on testing results. And that's why districts go out of their way each year providing (costly) remedial test-taking support to students prior to the testing dates. Rankings are also "helped" by the number of AP classes a district offers; classes which also "cost more" because the teachers typically (and understandably) have more experience/…   more ›
