Millburn School District gives unofficial update on spring recess so parents can plan accordingly.
This is an update from the Millburn Township Schools on Spring Recess for unofficial planning purposes only. See below for how and when the school calendar decision will become official: The Millburn Schools’ 2012-2013 Spring Recess was originally scheduled for the week of April 22-26, 2013. As school families and staff know, as a result of Hurricane Sandy the district used all of its built-in “emergency closing days.” While the majority of the schools were able to make up all the days they needed to by holding classes on the NJEA Convention Days and Martin Luther King Day, Deerfield and Hartshorn schools still need to make up days: 1 for Deerfield and 2 for Hartshorn. As a result, Deerfield school staff and students will attend school …

Superintendent James Crisfield gives Millburn fifth storm update
Dear Millburn Families, This is Update #5 in our ongoing attempt to keep everyone up to speed on how things are progressing and looking post-Sandy. Actually, this update is going to be very short. Workers are still out there as of Saturday at 5:00pm, and they will be on the job tomorrow as well. Of course, it doesn't help that we lose an hour of daylight/utility repair time tomorrow. So it goes. One more hurdle... The next update (set to come out towards the end of the afternoon tomorrow) will be much more comprehensive. I am conferring with building principals about all sorts of things, from report cards to busing and everything in between. Many details tomorrow. For now, we still plan on having school next week. All five days if …
Dr. James Crisfield issues an update for Millburn schools.
This is Update #4 in our series of post Hurricane Sandy communications. I have a sliver of optimism to share! It is confirmed that about 10% or so of the township has had power restored. It's a start... No schools are back up yet, but they will be part of the power company's methodical approach to getting everyone back to full power. No better forecast yet in terms of WHEN, but we are finally making progress. Here are some other tidbits for your planning purposes: **Regarding school next week, we ARE going to try to have school on both Thursday and Friday (if not sooner). We have come to an agreement with the teachers and they are very anxious to help in any way they can, which I greatly appreciate. Of course, all plans for …
The Board of Education takes students off of wait-list early and looks to add a bus route to improve busing in the district.
The Millburn School Board announced it will add an additional bus route to accommodate more students. The district announced it will change its original timeline and add a route for 50 new students and late applications. "We knew we'd be busing more students than last year," business administrator, Steven Di Geronimo, said. "What we didn't know is that many of families missed the submission deadlines and they too need transportation." The district added the students on the wait-list to bus routes last week as a step to help families instead of waiting until this week, the original date. The deadline for the busing application was June 30. The middle and high school routes have the highest number of students. The district approved a …

Celebration of Student Art at the Paper Mill and the Education Center
From the Millburn Township Public Schools: It’s March, which means it is Youth Art Month, a national program designed to emphasize the value of art and art education for all children. In Millburn, the school district celebrated student work at the Paper Mill Playhouse on Monday. More than 150 artworks were displayed, representing Millburn's K-12 Art curriculum. It is an evening for honored students to celebrate with their families and teachers. Although March is Youth Art Month, Millburn Schools celebrate the arts on a daily basis all year. Millburn students have made numerous artistic achievements both locally and nationally. Here is a small sampling of some of the recent special awards and events where Millburn Art students have been …

Will 'boutique' schools be approved? Department of Education to release new class of charters on Friday.
Millburn and nearby districts will learn on Friday the decision on two charter schools that would teach bilingual immersion, the state Department of Education said. Sen. Richard Codey has called this new class of approvals “a watershed moment” in education as charter schools try to move into suburbs with high-performing school districts. The state Department of Education has before it 55 applications for new charters, including the two Mandarin-immersion schools that would recruit students from Millburn and neighboring districts. The decisions have been cloaked in secrecy. “They’ve been closed mouth about it, at least around me,” said Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-27th District) on Thursday. Jasey has been leading efforts in Trenton to …
